I’ve been contemplating buying a 570GT currently my preference, or possibly a Honda NSX.
Has anybody driven both?
How are the servicing costs, and general usability as a fun / weekend / touring car?
One of the things I’m a bit twitchy about is the McLaren Iris system.
Any thoughts please?

Can't help you on the NSX I'm afraid.

I just recently got back from a 2,000 mile trip in my 570GT around a few different German cities. Two people, ten days, no complaints on luggage capacity or comfort in the car.

The Iris has crashed on me a few times, apart from that it's "ok". I have my phone separately on a mount for navigation as many do, Iris manages to handle ventilation and music ok most of the time.

Haven't had it long enough to really judge running costs, but so far V Engineering seem like a good option to keep the car in good shape at manageable costs.

IMO there isn't really any decisive reason not to get the McLaren, except if you have a preference for the Honda.

I've been pleasantly surprised by Iris TBH. After all the stories on here I was expecting it to be terrible, but it works fine. Easy to manage climate, phone calls, radio, bluetooth media from phone etc. The satnav works fine - for a longer trip/tour with multiple stops etc I'd use my phone with Waze or MRA anyway, but that would be the case in most cars. The screen's difficult to read when wearing my polarised sunglasses, but that was also the case in my GT4.

Bit of a non issue IMHO. In any case, the infotainment system is about the last criterion you should be considering in deciding whether or not to buy a McLaren! Have you driven one yet?

Driven the 570 .. loved it. Was wondering what they are like to live with.
Not driven an NSX yet.
Agreed infotainment isn’t #1 priority but still useful & splashing 100k I’d expect reliable. So long as it can do Apple car play all is redeemed.

I don’t think you’ll be getting Apple car play in a 570. The Artura is the first to get it I believe?

IRIS is not an issue for me.
Never understood the complaints.
Ok I get everyone want apple car play or android these days but I'm happy with IRIS in my 675LT

It appears that the NSX has 110 litres of luggage space, vs the 370 litres claimed for the 570GT. https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/honda/nsx
For me, having less than a third of the luggage space would probably stop me using the car for longer trips two-up such as my recent jaunt.

Yes .. good point, I’d spotted that in reviews of the NSX re luggage space. Given that the usage would be fun trips away that’s a factor.
What’s reliability / maintenance / costs / service centre availability like? The Honda (reviews say) is bullet proof but only 2 NSX approved centres in U.K. both in London.
Re service / maintenance I’m not overly worried about costs on my BMW M4 Competition (which I’ll be keeping), how would the Mac compare?

McLaren have a decent network of dealers covering England https://retailers.mclaren.com/en - Bristol do servicing apparently which should be convenient for you in Bath. On the independent side there are only a few, I'm happy so far with V Engineering in Thatcham, just off the M4.

McLaren warranty is £3k/year, servicing maybe a bit over £1k a year with them, alternating major and minor, some years a bit more. I'm hoping that going independent will work out under the £4k/year, but time will tell, I only got my car in Feb. It's worth reading some of the owners threads on here for the highs and lows, mostly good but some owners have been hit with some significant bills, either out of warranty or for things not covered. I've seen 570s come up for sale with 30, 40, 50k miles on them which seems reasonable testament to both their usability and not being too fragile.

If you buy approved used it will come with 12 month McLaren warranty, so maybe a good place to start and then see how things go.

V engineering are very good and half the labour rates of Mclaren dealers.
Probably best to get servicing done at mac dealer when new but for anything else wouldnt hesitate to recommend V engineering

Not sure if the OP has seen this Autocar vid, it's when the NSX first came out and is compared against the 570S (not the GT).

I had a 570GT, and put quite a few miles on it, including a trip down to the Algarve. They are an excellent car - practical, with a great ride making touring easy, loads of power and a really lovely driving balance.

After a brief spell with a Ferrari Portofino, I'm now back in a 720S Spider, which is epic. Nothing happened with my 570 that would put me off another McLaren.

I have a readers cars thread on it here: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

I also don't get the hate for IRIS, I've had no issues with mine over 5 years.

I've also got a reader's thread on running a 540C over the years, mostly extremely positive but a few nasty bills along the way. Still absolutely love it and don't think an NSX is even remotely as special.

Iris is what it is… the lack of CarPlay is a pain when you’re used to it in other cars. All I tend to do is start a playlist off on Spotify before I set off, then use Siri to voice command new playlists as needed.

If I need Waze, I start that off too, and just have voice alerts on for speed cameras etc.

Outside of that, the HVAC all works better, and it’s better than the system in the Ferrari that constantly defaulted to ‘no Media’ when on the last journey you were listening to the radio. You had to reselect the radio each time.

I find IRIS fine - although I don't really use it much. I have Auto-Alexa in my cars, so simply switch IRIS to bluetooth (wish it remembered that each time I start the car), and then listen to radio / music etc. with voice commands.
