My 570GT's 4th service is due in June.

One of the attractions of buying a 2019 car was that it's still under the 5 year McLaren paint corrosion warranty.

However, all things being equal I'd prefer to have V Engineering do the service for various reasons, rather than going to the McLaren dealer.

If the car doesn't go back to McLaren for the annual service but has it done elsewhere, will that prevent me from getting the paintwork checked and if necessary rectified next year, just before it turns five?

Not sure how much truth there is in this, but I have been told that any goodwill from McLaren beyond warranty periods etc is based on a few factors like, how long you have owned the car for, does it have full dealer history and does it have any existing McLaren Extended Warranty.

I’ve heard the same thing. Not from McLaren or an authorised dealer (dealer said non-franchise service would invalidate the extended warranty - fairly sure that’s BS). From a fellow owner who probably heard it from some other equally reliable source. Could ask McKaren, I suppose

LOL, McKaren.... love it!

To be clear, I'm not asking about potential goodwill, I'm asking about what I need to do so that McLaren fulfil their obligations under the five year paint corrosion warranty. Given it's a relatively common problem and relatively expensive to remedy, and my car is one of the more special colours, I don't really want to end up footing the bill. In other contexts I've heard of a car having to go back to a franchised dealer on the service schedule, so they can inspect for any corrosion issues, to maintain the cover.

I'm afraid, without wishing to break PH rule 5, I've always found franchised dealers to be awful, and the possibility of goodwill contribution from the manufacturer doesn't make up for that - especially as it's typically a discount on an already overpriced repair bill compared to an independent.

However if it's required to keep the paint warranty then I'll suffer them just this once...

Service elsewhere can’t affect your right to claim against original 5 year paintwork warranty should it fail with corrosion. There’s no requirement for paint inspection by a franchised dealer - you can ask a squirrel to do it if you don’t trust your own eyesight. Then take it to a franchised dealer and tell them what your squirrel said 😃👍

I mostly used Guildford on my last 650, and found them very good - and reasonably priced. In fact, like for like the service at an Indy seemed to be about the same as the official service at Guildford (within £100).
Having said that - actually getting your car booked in at Guildford is a bit challenging these days. And my local Indy (V) now offer things an official dealer can't - e.g. accumulators that can be recharged, a fix for headlights that have come loose etc. etc.
My current 650 will be serviced at V, not McLaren - not so much about the price, but more about the fact that - good as Guildford is - I think V are at least one step above them.

I found Mclaren New Forest to be fantastic, car collected and returned for free (i appreciate their rates include this), service was good and nice people. Some good will was extended and had a door hinge replaced and bodywork outside of the 5th year warranty which i am sure wouldnt have happened if i had gone to an indy, so its just a consideration of how long you think you will own the car, if not longer than the 5 year warranty, go indy.

AIUI from a legal viewpoint, you can get your car serviced wherever you like without affecting the original warranty, provided it is done to the correct specifications.

If you want their *extended* warranty then this is separate to the original one (I gather it is insurance backed provided by a third party) and they can put whatever conditions they want on it.

The original paint warranty is cast in stone, and is not affected by the service.

However if there comes a case where discretion is involved, if I were a dealer I'd be more likely to want to retain the custom of someone who spends large sums with me and is likely to trade up to another car, than I would about someone already at their spending limit in a once in a lifetime purchase being run as cheaply as they can manage and after 3 years I'll never see them again.
