Afternoon all, I'm looking for some advice on various models to try and find the right one to suit me. So first of all I’ve never had a McLaren, my "fun" cars have always been Aston martins. I’ve had 6 all told and really not liking the new MB AMLS so I started looking around. I had a drive in a 600LT and that was me sold that the next car should be a Mclaren. The 600LT was obscenely quick, plenty quick enough for me, I’m told the 720s is even quicker. I’m also sure the 570s would be plenty quick enough for me. I will only do around 2000 miles a year in the car as it will be a third car.

So here is what I’m looking for, a late 2019/20 car. I’m used to AMLs so I’m used to unreliability issues, that being said as unreliable as Astons can be I’ve never had any major issues with any of them that have meant taking them off the road for more than a day. I loved the “theatre” of the 600LT but my real questions is this, out of the 3 which is going to be the most reliable, least costly to run. The 570s is the super sensible option as clearly cost a lot less than the 600LT or the 720s. My ceiling would be circa £160k so very few options for 600LT and 720s for 2020 year. Plenty of options for 570s.

Any feedback appreciated. I’d like to know
• Most reliable/cost efficient
• Any real serious issues to look for?

I imagine once I’ve narrowed down which model to look for I’ll have many other questions!

Thanks in advance, I know the questions are relatively ambiguous and open ended!

Mark

In terms of cost to run them, 570S and 600LT are the same, 720S slighlty higher for consumption and I believe service cost.

Really you should choose based on price/affordability and preference.

570S: comfortable, quick, simple
600LT: engaging, not really comfortable compared to others, lots of noises (inc. amazing exhaust) and driver engagement
720S: mix of performance and comfort due to active suspensions, the quickest for power and torque although less track focused car.

If the 600LT sold you to change to a Mclaren why not just just get one of those? Make sure its got the warranty and just enjoy?

The 570s is incredible value for money and a great way to dip the toe into McLaren ownership, super quick looks great etc. your budget allows for a 720s coupe or 600 LT Spider tho so for me it would be the latter …pure theatre and a silly car ( in the best way possible !).

Why narrow yourself down to a 2020 car? As long as you have a Mclaren warranty on it I’d personally not be too fussed about that.

My 2019 600LT is currently for sale on here (the volcano orange Clubsport car) more than happy to answer any questions you may have.

570S - Fantastic all rounder, bargain of the century in the 80k region, more for a Spider. Simple, less to go wrong.
600 LT - What I own, for me the best Mclaren for my requirements which is the most driver focused, engaging and somewhat fun without going too fast but every single Mclaren is seriously capable and when you open the taps your quickly above a lepton, so keep an eye out for cameras. Again simple, so less to go wrong.
720S - Ballistic fast! I however found it totally boring on the road, sub 100mph for me I just had no fun driving it, something which does inflict all Mclarens to an extent due to their ability and turbocharged engine, more to go wrong.

Drive all the cars, only you can decide what is best for you but I went 600 LT as how many cars have top exit exhaust? It is the best sound Mclaren for the driver which is surely what matters most with those exhaust right behind your head.

What I would say is a Mclaren should be a Spider, as there is very little negative (50kg which you will never feel) as with carbon tub your not sacrificing ride quality or structural strength, so no skuttle shake like you get in a convertible Ferrari for example. 150-160k easily gets you a 570S or 600 LT Spider, get to enjoy the top exist exhaust roof up or down with a Spider on 600 LT (drop back window roof up or drop the roof), hence I went 600 LT Spider, they are more money than a 570S but it is just the initial spend, when you sell it on it will still be worth more as there is only around 330 600 LT's in the UK of which around 180 are coupes and rest Spiders.

But go drive them all, only you can decide what is right for you but for me Sports series cars handle more akin to what I expect and are cheaper to run, but warranty is advisable on all Mclaren models.

A brief run down on the next few pages of this thread op:

570s owners will tell you to buy a 570s, 600lt a 600lt and so on.

Then a few 12c/650s owners will tell you to buy one of them and probably a 675lt owner will say can you strech your budget as they are the best Mclaren...

In all seriousness what a lovely position to be in, a choice of pretty much the range. I had a 570s and if i had your budget, a 720s would be in my garage now, despite the increase in warranty cost, although if you buy from a main dealer you can negotiate 2 years warranty into the deal, so realistically no difference in running costs or reliability.

Paint is the main concern so a later car is covered for paint defects in the 5 year paint warranty.

As Gibbo says, just drive all of them, im sure you will find a preference smile

Coming from an Aston (I have both), not sure what you are looking for. If it’s more of a GT long distance vibe then go with the super series (720) with their superb adaptive damping. They’re all very capable but the LT adds more noise and tractability that most consider driver interaction, but could also be called NVH wink And like myself, coming from an Aston, perhaps you will prefer a cleaner look with an integrated spoiler and a smoother fascia.

As Gibbo said, the spider is a must if only for the sound inside the cabin with the rear window lowered.

I have owned all 3 and all offer something a little bit different

I still have the 720s

If you are going to do a few track days then the 600LT and 720s are better.

For just road use then any work although the 600LT is a bit less comfortable and a harsher drive but some theatre

Owned a '18 570s spider for two years, 10k miles and loved every minute. That car is the best all around car out there. Had two issues: the V module (oil filter housing) and a loose O2 sensor. When I said two issues I forgot to mention the occasional electrical anomalies that clear themselves: windows and key not found. It was a pleasure drive and did everything well. Spent six months agonizing over moving to a 720. Finally, succumbed to the allure and made the move.

A spider with all the options and my preferred color was available and too much to resist. I'll start by saying I love the car. Got it with 2k miles, balance of factory warranty and a CPO. First issue was the 'suspension failure' message which required an accumulator change under warranty. Next was a self-induced problem, ran across a small foliage and nicked the carbon fiber front splitter. You can imagine the cost of a 3cm bruise...reluctant to submit to insurance company due to difficulty insuring a McLaren, paid for it personally. V module was replaced at the same time. The Infotainment system failed requiring 40 days at the dealer...under warranty. Out of the 15 months I've owned the car it has spent 2 months at the dealer. Had the car out this morning and smiled every mile...it now has 6500miles. I admit to being anxious to get the car back, but not to the point of being angry...after all, it's a low production supercar.

The 720 is a delight to drive and, like the 570 does everything well...just better and dangerously faster. The running costs will be higher and accumulators aren't covered beyond factory warranty. Would I do it again? I'm not sure. I really was smitten with the 570 and it was fast enough to be in the felony zone in seconds. If the garage was big enough...

My advice would be to take your time and find the perfect McLaren for you. Enjoy the journey and good luck.

Thanks to everyone for all the comments and feedback, much appreciated.

I'm going to take a cautious safer route for my first Mclaren experience and go with the 570s for this year and see how I get on. I'll post a separete thread for advice on what to look for there! BUT thanks everyone for the comments, all helpful.

I don't think there is a bad choice, they are all flipping brilliant cars (barring model to model quality control quirks)

Best thing is to have a look and a drive of a few and get a feel for how they suit your preferences for ride/power/turn in/aesthetics in and out. Then make your choice based on those preferences.

I moved to my first mclaren last year and after ferrari/porsche/maserati i have finally found the kind of car I have been looking for all these years.
