I am considering a 2016 540 in a stunning colour that is the same price as a similar age/mileage 570 but in a more boring colour. Is s 570 always worth more than a similar age and miles 540 or should it not matter that much? This is my first foray into supercar territory and don’t want to get badly burnt with terrible costs of ownership (recognising that it won’t be cheap).
Purely personal, the 540 would have to be a fair bit cheaper than a 570s to justify it.
I know there really isnt a lot between them in performance but the 570s will always be more desirable, carbon brakes, nicer side skirts, rear diffuser and was obviously more expensive to buy originally.
I did toy with the idea of a 540 before i got my 570s, but with a marginal difference in price the 570s seemed a better buy.
I would buy the 570s and get it wrapped if you really dont like the colour.

Go for the 570 if colour is the only thing different, or wait for a 570 in a colour you like. The 540 missing the carbon brakes would be enough reason to go for the 570, not to mention everything else not included on the 540. Also I assume the 540 will be much harder to sell than the 570. If they are a similar price it really is an easy choice in my opinion.
On a side note, I’d always get a McLaren from a McLaren dealership instead of an independent if it’s out of factory warranty, they come with 12 months extended warranty as standard and will have been inspected. If you get one from an independent you can add warranty at around £4k a year, but it must be inspected first and you must pay for anything they find wrong with it to get the warranty.

if you're worried about potential costs, then double check the cost of the 570's discsI'd say price difference would be the big factor here. I'd much rather have either of them in the correct colour / spec, than buying one missing spec or in a colour you don't like.
I've the 540C and the steel brakes are more than enough on the road. The 570S will always be more desirable but the difference is fairly small in the real world. If you want a convertible then obviously there is only one option.
Post the two cars up and we can compare?

Thanks for the responses and suggestions. I suppose the carbon disks on the 570 are good if you want to track day your car but otherwise are a liability for regular driving due to the high cost to replace - do people have a view on how long they last in road use?
A lifetime of no brake dust makes it perfect for a road carIts actually the other way round in that tracking a car on ceramics can become expensive

Normal road use the disks will last 70-80k miles I've been told... I've had my 570s for two years and done 11k miles (28k on car now) and that's including 7 trackdays over the period. I always have the car inspected before every outing (Two of those were Ring doubles) and at last service/inspection in Nov disks were all good, pads will need replacing this yr I think but thats a standard consumable. Replaced rear tyres last summer and fronts will be done in the spring. I press on when on track but 8/10ths pace which is still plenty quick in one if these!540/570 are both great cars tbh and little real world difference in pace...the exterior finish in the 570S is a little nicer with the palladium front splitter and nicer diffuser and side skirts. I didn't look at 540's when I was buying as the price differential wasn't large enough and the 570S felt like the 'value'. Overall I have had issues with the car that were all covered under warranty, it's a must imo. You gotta allow for £5k pa to run one of these (warranty and servicing), if those running costs make you baulk then something like Porsche 911 Turbo or a V10 R8 make more sense. Both are immensely capable and that V10 is a majestic engine but neither come close to the overall McLaren package...true supercar looks and performance and universally loved by the general public. I can say that despite the issues I've had (all brilliantly resolved by my dealer) I've loved every minute of owning mine and have no clue what I could replace it with without dropping a big chunk more in cash!

I agree with the above, if it was purely a track car I’d actually say go for the 540 over the 570. A lot of the people that are very track heavy actually swap out the carbons on 570s and 720s for aftermarket steels due to the cost of replacement. On a road car you are definitely better off with Carbon, they’ll last much longer, upwards of 70k miles, produce no brake dust and are much lighter. https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/2017-mclaren-5...
How about this one for a bit of a crazy option….

I did 12 months in both 540c and then 570 spider. Both are great cars. You do notice the extra mid range and peak torque in the 570 and suspension felt more controlled, I found the 570 to feel like 540 turned up to 11. I liked the steel brakes on 540, was excellent pedal feel and very strong stopping power.

Does a lantana purple track pack 570 interest you. Very high spec list was almost £200,000.
McLaren extended warranty until July.
It’s going to the trade soon so might be the bargain you are looking for.
