12c For Sale With New Engine / Gearbox - Anyone Know It?
Discussion
Hi folks
Does anyone have any knowledge of the 12c being sold at Brookespeed?
High miles, but fairly attractive price - especially with a new engine / gearbox / steel discs.
Would be interested to find out its 'story'.

According to the people I speak to, that work on them for a living, they are.Terrible, sloppy ad. I wouldn't feel comfortable buying a car from this guy. If English was my second language, or I wasn't able to write properly, I think I'd take the trouble to ask a friend to check my copy if I was trying to sell a £65k car.

My personal experience of owning both is that they aren't..........engine rebuilds and gearbox changes are not common amongst sports series cars......they are with 12c's. Great cars, I loved my 12c but there always seems to feel like theres a big bill around the corner, even if it's just the £6k service and warranty costs every 12 months........independents have helped but in my opinion it's why they are down to circa £65k and upwards......Terrible, sloppy ad. Agreed, 6k is a lot, but at least you know that’s pretty much it for the year. & the McLaren warranty doesn’t have a £10k annual limit, so you can get every tiny little thing seen to as soon as something starts to annoy you.
My 12C, for example, has had new headlamps, rear lamps & side markers, all due to condensation. OK, these aren’t little things (to pay for), but owners without a warranty may think these things just aren’t worth paying out for. The steering was very slightly sub-optimal, so a new steering rack was fitted; same with the suspension (suspension accumulators replaced). The indicators didn’t always cancel – new indicator stalk, please. The climate control screens weren’t as bright as when new – two new screens, please. A little rattle from the interior trim? Someone else can spend two hours finding it. These are the kinds of things that you just wouldn’t fork out for yourself, but if you’re going to keep your car for good few years & you have a McLaren warranty, you inevitably end up enjoying driving around in a much better car than if you hadn’t spent your £6k a year on the warranty & service.
In the interests of full disclosure, I should just add that it wasn’t my £6k a year that has been keeping my 12C in such fine fettle over the past nine years – my dad paid approx. 9 x £6k since the car was new, & I inherited the car from him when he died in July. I’ve enjoyed getting to know the car over the past six months, but it’s time to move on now, so I’ll be back in my Evora (the poor man’s 12C) for a few months while I wait for my new Alpine to arrive (due April). I’m really going to miss that beautiful steering wheel, steering feel & driving position.

I did look at this car, although I’ve since placed a deposit on another that I pick up shortly.
This car needs some paint in places, principally the front bumper. Just stone chops from what I could see. This is apparently due to be done prior to sale. Wheel refurbish also.
Likely, this paint is the early Volcano Orange type that fades making a colour match difficult. It has already had a new front wing (maybe both sides) due to bubbling and the colour of the new paint looked a little off to me. Not right for those of us with OCD.
I didn’t ask to see it but I was told the supporting paperwork exists. Not entirely sure what the inclusive warranty was, possibly not as strong as it would need to be. I seem to remember it had a £3k limit.
But a fair price so it would be worth considering. This car has done quite high miles (for a McLaren) but I am told that this makes it a safer choice than a garage Queen.

Don't some sports series suffer from Aluminium liners failure whereas the Super series has steel liners? Perhaps that's what they may have meant. Just for balance. Question for me?
Collecting Cars Spider went for less than I thought it would. Looks great value at £69.5k + fees. I would have bid just a bit higher than what it sold for. Missed opportunity perhaps. Of course, the eventual winner may have gone higher than I. And it was too far away for me to view.
I’m happy with my subsequent choice and I look forward to picking it up.
