Mclaren mileage sensitivity
Discussion
I'm actively looking for a Mclaren spider to purchase, I'm open to 12c, 650S or 570S dependent on colour/spec.
Part of me wants to avoid very low mile cars however I know I will put 10-15k before I consider selling and all the cars for sale are under 30k miles. Where are the higher mile cars? 12C's are now coming up to 10 years old but the majority of them have less than 20k miles.
Is it a case of the higher mile car owners just sticking with them considering the huge depreciation or are they just not coming onto the market for some reason?
There's a couple of 650s with 25k+ miles but the price delta isn't significant enough to lower cars IMO as I will be taking a much bigger whack selling them for 40k + miles.
Any input from current/ex owners?

Sure but the higher mile cars aren't priced as per the market in general so it feels as if I have to pay a premium for higher miles car which will only bite me when I come to sell. In the UK at least there appears to be a 30k mile threshold where values plummet.
So considering I'm planning to put miles on it, I'd rather buy with lower miles and still sell with relatively low miles. If this was a keeper I would happily buy a higher mile car and run it but I don't see myself keeping it beyond 2 years.

There are lots of higher miles McLaren's but owners tend to keep them. The general consensus is the opposite to some other supercars and prospective owners actively seek out higher miles cars. Buy any McLaren on condtion, history and warranty. They are not very mileage sensitive but if you buy hyper low miles make sure you have a warranty as they dont like sitting.

Lovely car and I had spotted that but currently I’m looking in the sub 100k segment however if prices keep going up then soon your car will be in budget.
650S Spider is my first choice at the moment, so few on the market though.
Can't go wrong with either. I was looking at 650S spider's initially as well, don't like to think how many miles I did travelling the length and breadth of the country. £100k is a bit low for me, someone offered me £107k a couple of months ago which in hindsight I probably should have taken! Saying that, they do look like they're still climbing. There was a lovely Volcano Red 650 with a perfect spec in Peterborough for sale for ages but the price was way too high. Belonged to the owner of the garage who wasn't fussed if it sold or not. Can't see it online anymore. 650S Spider is my first choice at the moment, so few on the market though.

Yeah, don't think I will be getting one of those in 2022.
Looking for a car for around a year of fun, and hoping depreciation is minimal.
I'm thinking of doing the same, have a 718 Spyder deposit but no allocation yet and with these at the same value it does make them seriously tempting; just need to find the higher maintenance costs!Looking for a car for around a year of fun, and hoping depreciation is minimal.

Given up on the 718 GT4 or an interim car until you get the allocation?

For me, the ideal possibility is a car (like mine) that is used regularly, but not necessarily for long trips - so less than 2000 miles/year.
I was going to say that unlike other supercars Mclaren owners actually seem to like to drive their cars and get them dirty. What's wrong with long trips? In my experience this does cars so much good compared to all the short drives they get in the UK, and long trips put the least amount of ware on the components.
2000 miles a year is barely warmed up.

When I sold my first McLaren (A 12C in 2017) I bought an Exige 350 V6 temporarily, which was so good it led to a 430CUP and then a 981 Spyder (to run alongside the 430CUP) which lasted a year then went as the Exige was a better drive (IMHO - others may have a different opinion). I eventually bought another McLaren but the Exige has stayed. So I guess I am saying look at an Exige V6 as a temporary car. I lost £1k on my 350 in 18 months and that was in 2018/19 pre the current mayhem. Now prices are rock solid.
I have been looking at Lotus cars. (Have a deposit down on the Emira)People who have owned them always seem to love them.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Sure, but I’m answering the OPs question. Best to get car that’s used regularly so that fluids flow and bearings are lubricated, but still does not have a lot of mileage. You don’t need to drive a 1000 miles for that. 20 miles will do. So a car with 100 trips 20 miles ea. is preferable to a car with 100 trips 1000 miles ea. What's wrong with long trips? Two of the sub 100k 650S spiders from yesterday have now gone above 100k
All from dealers mind you, are people buying these cars at asking price?
The MSO Iridium Blue one seems the most keenly priced but can’t seem to get in touch with the owner, if anyone knows the owner do let me know.
