570GT questions, life with etc
Discussion
Hello all,
I've mostly had various Lotus's over the years as for me they just can't be beaten for involvement, driving fun, little depreciation and cheap as chips to run. I still have an Elise in the garage for weekend fun and a 911.2 S for more daily duties. I've been looking at GT3 tourings lately but they are bit too expensive to justify the type of usage they would get (mostly daily and car trips). I've been thinking about 570GTs as well as I've never had a 'super car' if it qualifies, to want to scratch that itch. I think the 570Gt would suit me perfectly but admittedly I wouldn't use in the winter, and have never actually driven one.
I've heard and read nothing about how much trouble McLarens are and the shoddy quality so it makes me think that I should only buy from a McLaren dealer to have a suitable warranty. Life with the Porsche is much the same - I won't own without a manufacture extend warranty.
What should I budget per year for running costs? I've not followed the market so no idea on the current depreciation of these cars - does anyone know a rough figure from their perspective?
Anything in particular about this model I would be aware of ?
Many thanks

I don't have a GT, but my 540C would be broadly similar. I actually find the running costs very reasonable. I've owned mine for almost 4 years now.
25-27 mpg average.
£2850 per year warranty which is very comprehensive
£250 per tyre, I got 9k miles out my rears
Services alternate between major and minor, roughly £1200 and £800 respectively. One per year.
I would highly recommend it. My thread is on here somewhere about my ownership and I've possibly been lucky, but no major issues during my ownership

First year in a 570s and very happy so far, Ive had a major service @ 1200 from a main dealer, actually a bit less as i negotiated a better price. The car had a Mclaren multi point inspection at the time of purchase (private sale) and required to extend the warranty and it raised a couple of things, drive shaft oil seal and engine mounts which the then owner paid for, circa 1300.
I had two wings replaced due to corrosion, covered by the body warranty.
Ive not really checked mpg to be honest, i think its kind of irrelevent if you want a "supercar".
Also fitted a set of Michelin Cup 2's, which were 900 for the set.
After coming from a Vx220 in the past i can safely say its very similar in its handling and feedback, if not better, just on steroids, i do not think you would be dissapointed if you enjoy the Lotus chassis.

In my experience I’m not sure McLaren quality issues are any different from other low volume manufacturers.
Social media, internet, and people’s sense of importance always overamplifies issues.
Porsche are a more mature manufacturer but that didn’t stop my new 911 needing rms engine replaced under warranty amongst a list of other things within the first c.10k miles.
The part that caught my attention in the initial post is the love of Lotus due to low running costs and little depreciation. If that is important for you then I would not recommend a mac, more than any concerns on production quality.

I bought a 570GT after having Lotus, Noble and Porsche. Personally I've had no problems with my McLaren. There's certainly higher running costs but the extended warranty is fairly comprehensive. I'd recommend buying from a franchise dealer, McLaren Glasgow in my case. They put a lot of work into properly preparing my car before it went on sale. Prices have risen this year but you can probably say that about every marque.
This forum is fairly quite these days as most owners post on Facebook Owners Group. If you buy it's worth joining for the info and events. For instance, there was a gathering of 200+ cars at Silverstone earlier in the month at the McLaren Pure track day. They are worth attending, again not cheap but well organised. It was quite something to see an F1 GTR and a couple of Lewis Hamilton's F1 cars at a track day.

McLarens will never be cheap to run after all they are £150k - £200k hand built low volume super cars. You can never compare them to more mass produced cars like Porsche in terms of running cost or depreciation. Get an approved car with a 2 year warranty as that’s the safest route and probably best prepared too.
Buy one as they are great cars and if they don’t cost much then you’ve had a result but if you loose some money you will have gained fantastic memories of driving one of the best all round drivers cars out there and a GT is quite practical too.

Judging from the comments above, perhaps I'm in the unfortunate 10%, that has had a few issues.
I've a 2017 570GT, 25k miles.
Annual fixed costs for me last year (in 4th year of ownership) :
Warranty - £2985
Service - £1700 (4th service)
Insurance - £1500 (on a foreign license)
Tax - £590
So about £7000/year. I don't look at the fuel.
New rear tyres at a McLaren dealer were £490 each fitted. I went elsewhere for £240 each.
I've not found the warranty to be comprehensive :
- Suspension brushes = £3000
- Seal around wheel trim (there was a piece of rubber sticking 1.5 feet horizontally from the wheel) = £305
- Re-programming of windows that would not go up = £160
- Fixing/resetting the tracker = £230
- Paint-protection coming off on two panels, don't know the cost to fix this yet, not covered.
And the car is in for a corrosion check tomorrow. Corrosion on 4 panels currently. Unsure if this is covered, but if it's not, I'm done with McLaren.
A Mclaren dealer sold the car to me with loose foam inside the front tyre causing a vibration through the car and steering wheel. Took 2 visits to fix. This was covered. One of the panels was breaking away, this was covered/fixed.
And transmission failure twice, where the car was undriveable. They said they reset the software, and this was covered.
I think £7000/year is perfectly reasonable for what it is. And more than happy to stump that up.
But the other items leave a bad taste in the mouth.
Would I buy another McLaren? Not sure, I acknowledge I'm probably one of the unlucky ones.
But tomorrow I'll know for sure. If the corrosion is not covered, I couldn't countenance sticking around.

There's a 10 yr corrosion warranty that's separate to the manufacturer/extended warranty so you're covered, had 3 panels replaced on my 570s during the summer...the main problem for me was an engine issue, full engine out job would have been £15k to fix without the warranty so can't complain. I think the cars are a touch fragile and quality is inconsistent you get some v reliable ones and others with problems...they are great to drive tho and a fun thing to own.

Did you negotiate the price beforehand or after they presented you with the bill? Interested in this as always thought there was no scope for negotiation and got my 4th (major) service coming up.

This is under review, that is first hand from my local Mclaren dealer, i am awaiting a response from paint issues found during my service a month ago on whether its covered under the warranty. By all accounts they are being more strict with what they consider is covered under the 10 year warranty with regards to paint issues.Evening..
Bought mine early this year in lockdown without ever having sat in one as it had mega spec and I didn't want to miss out. Couldn't even drive past to look at it ! Thorney motorsport were amazing and dispensed lots of advice patiently and got them to do an inspection on it where they identified a few bits tht needed doing (front wishbones creaking and the undertray was damaged). McLaren Guildford were great too - offered to send me the build spec sheet on FB for it after welcoming me to ownership. Owners club much better than porsche. I've been in Porsches for 10 years (still have a couple) and had a faultless experience so was obviously a little nervous after reading all the keyboard warrior stuff but badly wanted one. And guess what? ALL supercars go wrong at some point ! (Mates pista shat itself afer two days of ownership and another pals performante spat a gearbox - but you never seem to hear about those ;>) !). Anyway, back on topic..
The car is incredible. Of course its stupid quick after my Porsches, But what immediatley struck me was the handling/steering is other wordly (probably not a surprise as they nicked a load of Lotus engineers to develop the chassis) and I would argue that the marginally softer set up in the GT suits road use better as. Driving position awesome. Use it for everything - track days, big shop (more luggage space than a focus !), taking doggo out - everything.
Build quality is spot on, and even the much laughed at IRIS system is very good IMO. I've driven it properly and no issues whatsoever so far but I do believe in using anything regularly - I think its the garage queens that have issues in any brand. Down sides ? The sun visors are a joke, the stadard exhaust was a bit quiet unless you were on it (so I had a Thorney catback system fitted which sounds lovely!), standard p zeros are s*** (so switched to PS4S for £940 - amazing difference!) - and - er - thats it ! If you do get one prepare for LOTS of attention and questions. I was gobsmacked tbh ! Also beeen offered £6k more than I paid for it earlier this year which was nice !
My car had had some of the weak bits done under warranty (door switches, bits and bobs and a new gearbox early doors as it had a slight weep - MccLaren just replace them), so although I was ready to give Thorney the money for a warranty John Thorne said it such a good car he's probably put the money to one side so I have.
The worst credible risk on these is the gearbox, but Thorney can rebuild them now for £9k..and who knows how many have actually 'failed' (its a graziano unit who also supply most other supercar brands). I remember the same worry about buying my first 997 with bore scoring/IMS/RMS issues and no one ever gave me a straight answer on the real risk there and in 4 years it never missed a beat.
Also added some wheels spacers which improved the handling and looks.
Couple of pics for you..good luck with the search and prepare to fall in love whe you find one !
