Just a quickie ...

Does the McLaren extended warranty cover blistering on the paintwork ?

Just noticed it in 3 places on 2 panels.

2017 570GT, 24,000 miles.

The extended warranty is nothing to do with that.

It's covered by the bodywork warranty which is valid even if you don't have extended mechanical warranty.

I suspect it's corrosion so would be covered under the original 10 year warranty anyway.

From the factory ...

Three years’ vehicle warranty
Three years’ paint surface warranty
10 years’ corrosion warranty

https://www.thorneymotorsport.co.uk/mclaren-bodywo...

Extended warranty should cover it also but you need to prove it's not wear and tear, exposure to the elements, etc. Most dealers would just push it through under the original factory warranty I suspect

Thanks to you both.

Once the panels are replaced, would they also sort the PPF ? Or would that be on me at my cost ?

The paint warranty is not 3 years - it's 5 years, at least in my owners manual.

I have certainly heard of cases where the PPF was also replaced at no cost, so I think you'll be ok.

3 years on a 2017 570GT according to the brochure. Looks like it's longer on the older Super Series assuming you have a 650S davek_964.

Yep, PPF should be reapplied at no cost to owner. Whether that happens or not is another matter

Yes, I have a 650.

I wasn't aware that the paint warranty had been reduced on sports series cars - never seen it mentioned before. But that could have serious implications for the OP :

There have been a few (credible) statements from owners that McLaren consider the bubbling to fall under the paint warranty, not the corrosion warranty - because the corrosion warranty specifically states "perforation" - and that McLaren are beginning to be a bit more rigid to the warranty period.
If the OP's car also has a 3 year paint warranty, this might not go as well as we've suggested.

Paint ‘Defect’ Warranty - 3 Years

Paint ‘Oxidisation’ Warranty - 5 Years

Perforation Warranty - 10 Years.

All listed in the Warranty & Service Book.

Without wanting to start another thread as I thought it's better to keep warranty questions in one thread…

Over on a US forum a few people have said that during the original 3 year warranty, if you want to track the car you must have a pre & post inspection done to keep your warranty intact. But there is conflicting information about tracking the car under the extended warranty.

This guy thinks tracking the car voids the extended warranty

https://youtu.be/ta4LkQdgAX0?t=102

Whereas posts on this thread (https://www.mclarenlife.com/threads/mclaren-warranty-vs-tracking-the-car.94345/post-1678163) are saying that the extended warranty will still cover road issues, but nothing that arises during the car being on track.

Anyone got any concrete information from tracking a car in the UK under the original and extended warranty?

I believe it’s the case for the original 3 yr warranty but not required on the extended warranty. I’ve had pre inspections done before visits to the Ring but that was purely for peace of mind. In any case I’m not sure how they could prove that you had been on track.

Best of luck trying but I understand McLaren only now cover the paint bubbling for 5 years. They no longer recognise it as ‘corrosion’. They did repair many older cars as good will but those days are now past. Thorney offer a repair service through a partner body shop. Less than 50% of panel replacement. No guarantee the bubbling won’t return but there is no guarantee that a new panel won’t also bubble.

I'd have more confidence in the longevity of a panel properly prepped and repainted by somone Thorney trust than a new one from McL that had been through the same process as all their other ones. Wonder how they got the paint code?

Paint codes are available with any bodyshop who uses akzo nobel mixing systems, its a myth that only mclaren have the codes.

Are you 100% on that, when i bought my 570s and had it mpi'd for extended warranty i asked the question and was told it needs pre and post inspection for the warranty to remain valid, although how they actually would know is a different matter.

This is from the Extended Warranty document -

Track and Competition Use
The McLaren Warranty will cover the use of McLaren vehicles during track use in the following circumstances:
a. If the track event is of a non-competitive nature, and the vehicle has been fully inspected by an Approved Service Representative immediately before and immediately after the track event.

That says “The McLaren Warranty” not “The McLaren Extended Warranty”, or am I being too sinister? biglaugh

Well it does say “ 1. This Warranty applies to the McLaren Vehicle described in the Warranty Confirmation Letter.”
