Hi all, I'm looking for a sub 3 year old 570GT or S and found something I really like thats just 3 yrs old. It has about 10 months MCL warranty left and thats a real bonus to me as a first time supercar owner. Its only 3k miles so my peace of mind would be high....BUT, I spoke to a couple of McLaren dealers today to let them know my search may be up as I'd found a car. Both dealers tell me that the Indy cannot pass through the MCL warranty to me, the only way to do that is through a private sale.

However, my Indy chap tells me he will get the warranty swapped by an MCL dealer?

If this is the correct (which I believe it must be) why do so many Indies offer MCL warranties on their sales if this is the case? I did find a copy of transfer of ownership on warranty and it does confirm what the dealers say. I have also asked for official confirmation from MCL customer services too.

It appears my options are to either let my Indy find a 'way round things' and spend 10 months on relative tenterhooks hoping I don't need to claim, buy privately with a car with warranty (funding this might be a little more difficult though), or thirdly buy a 'completely straight car' directly from a MCL dealer.

Third option is always the 'best' option from a peace of mind perspective, but at a time when prices are high and cars are scarce, dare I take the plunge or gamble on Indy guy?

Not sure how the dealer can do it unless it's SOR. It is very clearly not within the terms of the warranty.

I think it's very likely you'd end up with no warranty.

(I assume it's just over 3 years old and hence extended warranty)

Just ask him as per the post above if the car is Sale Or Return where you are buying it. If that is the case then the paperwork will reflect a private sale person to person as far as the warranty goes.

The transfer documents for a McLaren warranty explicitly state only a private sale can be transferred or a fresh warranty applied by a main dealer, An independent dealer cannot pass on the warranty. If he is acting as a broker, for a fee. that could be possible but the warranty transfer would need to be from the existing private owner, while he is still the owner, to yourself, with no independent dealer involvement.

My understanding from recently looking myself is as per Bispal said, the current owner can apply to Mclaren (not a dealer) to have the warranty transferred and the key word is apply, by all accounts Mclaren are not obliged to transfer it, although i rarely suspect they say no.

Have the previous owner transfer the warranty over to you (assuming the dealer could arrange that)...did this when I bought my 570s from a big non McLaren dealer and the car wasn't SoR.
