So my car is coming up for 3 years old. The manufacturer's warranty expires 01/07/21. Been quoted £2985 to extend it for 1-year via my local main dealer (Hatfield). So does the extended warranty mirror the original 3-year one that comes with the car from new or is it not quite as comprehensive? The policy document I've been sent from the dealer is a little vague.

First three years is from the manufacturer, the extended warranty is from a third party and not as comprehensive.

I've been on an extended warranty since I got mine but the car was over 3 yrs old when I purchased it ...for me it's been pretty comprehensive and very glad I had it!

So the 'extended warranty' policy booklet just looks like something you'd pick up in the showroom and is covered with McLaren logos and photos. Inside it states the insurer is 'Motors Insurance Company Ltd' and is administrated by 'Car Care Plan Ltd' trading as 'McLaren Extended Warranty Administration Services' both with the same address in Thornbury, W Yorks.

Is this the same one that all UK main dealers offer?

Yes, all official dealers offer the same warranty. It is comprehensive and does cover most things but there are some exclusions.

Perfect, thanks for the clarification everyone.

Car was registered 23/07/18 but they're saying the warranty is due 01/07/21 which is a bit odd. Will ask them to check tomorrow. Perhaps it's done in a similar way to RFL. Me being tight worked out that's £172 worth of warranty I'm not getting ha!

That's a bit odd with the dates. My extended warranty was applied when I bought the car and hence expires something like 22nd August. I am 100% sure that it is not aligned with any month start, and - in the unlikely event I decided to renew - I'd be doing it the day before that.

Slight tangent. Is it correct that you have to have your car inspected pre and post track day to keep the warranty ?

With the extended warranty that's not a requirement...I have had pre trackday inspections done before trips to the Ring but more for peace of mind than warranty related. I believe that under the original 3 yr manufacturer warranty it is a requirement though.

That's not because the extended warranty is more forgiving though. The terms of the extended warranty say something along the lines of : If we decide the problem was caused by track use, we're not paying.

Maybe so but how could they prove you had been on track if they were to take that line?

I have no idea. But that's no different from the manufacturer warranty, unless you're doing a McLaren organised event.
