My 570s And McLaren Ownership Experience
Discussion
Hello,
Wanted to share my McLaren ownership experience with you guys, just in case anyone else was thinking of taking the plunge!
Firstly - it's been fantastic! I read so many horror stories, many of which may be related to a small few people with too large a voice. I picked my storm grey one up in June of 2019. Had a test drive in one at McLaren Ascot and was totally blown away by the car. I was also looking at a 911 Turbo and an R8. The 911 Turbo just felt a little too clinical, and the R8 was too small. I'm a tall guy so needed something that was comfortable. Also looked at a Nissan GTR, but the driving position didn't feel quite right...
The has been a pure joy to own, it's needed only a small bit of work doing, one for the indicator stalk not staying engaged (and I'm a well behaved driver) and another for a small blemish on the paint. Other than that it's been rock solid.
Now, one thing I wasn't expecting is just quite how many heads it turns, and how many people comment on it. When you live with one you kind of take for granted just how it looks, but when you take time to admire it, it's a phenomenal looking bit of kit. The noise it makes is great when you open it up, that flat plane crank, and turbo whoosh are pure fun. The car just screams fun and playfulness and I can't fault the handling and speed at all. You should also learn to left foot brake if you have one of these, makes the experience that much better.
If you have any questions at all for me feel free to ask and I'll try my best to answer!
Cheers!

As someone considering buying their first ever supercar (and its got to be a McLaren), that's good to hear.
For the last 12 months whilst waiting to retire I have done quite a lot of research on all the main supercars ( Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche ) and decided it had to be a McLaren despite coming across far too many horror stories on the internet that seemed to be about a friend of a friends nan down the pub etc... I'm guessing it was mainly non owners knocking the McLaren brand in some form of self justification of their own purchase but these things seem to get magnified and blown out of proportion on the internet anyway so I take it with a pinch of salt and rely on my own findings.
I'm sure all car brands can have issues with their cars but maybe McLaren could quash them better by giving exemplary customer service if/when it does occur
Personally I love all the major brands and wouldn't knock anothers choice becuase I just appreciate all forms of cars and its not a status thing for me.
I'm equally happy and excited about my sons Audi RS3 TBH and wouldn't knock a Merc A45S either

Did your indicator stalk always fail to stay engaged or only sometimes?
I've noticed mine sometimes takes two or three attempts to stay engaged - I think only on rh turns - and I've only noticed it over the last few months.
Yep! Seems like the same problem I had, sounds like it will need replaced....I've noticed mine sometimes takes two or three attempts to stay engaged - I think only on rh turns - and I've only noticed it over the last few months.

Thanks - it's irritated me a few times but I hadn't quite reached the point where I was sure it was a genuine problem. Car will probably be back with Guildford for an MOT in 2 months, so I'll get it looked at then.
OMG 😲 it sounds like a complete shed and only worth 50 p now so can I buy it off you for a £1 pleasedavek_964 said:

Yeah - it's more of a niggle than anything else but once it's fixed it's like a whole new car - so satisfying! 😀Fezzamania said:

Totally agree with this - my experience seems to be people knocking them because they've read one story, or heard one rumour. We know what the internet is like - things just snowball from there. Also pretty sure these people have never even sat in one let alone owned one. I've had nothing but great Customer service from McLaren....For the last 12 months whilst waiting to retire I have done quite a lot of research on all the main supercars ( Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche ) and decided it had to be a McLaren despite coming across far too many horror stories on the internet that seemed to be about a friend of a friends nan down the pub etc... Probably sounds like I'm being paid to say this, absolutely not. I just think they get an unfair share of bad press... and the product is fantastic.
No brand of car is faultless - as long as they put things right you're good.
Absolutely agree with this. My 570s had "transmission fault - call Mclaren" the day I came home with it, but its the way it was dealt with (faultless) that mattered. Other cars I've had have not been without issues either (RMS issue on a boxster and an oil leak on a 911, astons have had 'corrosion' issues) - so this is not specifically Mclaren. I often wonder what the percentage of people saying negative things are actually owners (vs people with an opinion) ?
I'm 3 mths into a 2018 570S Spider. Absolutely loving every minute despite a couple of little niggles. Still have a strong love for Lamborghini & Ferrari but gelled with this car like nothing I've had before. I'd like to own a 458 or Huracan at some point although now I'm already looking at 720S and 675LT. For me the 570S was a great entry point into a brand that has had so much negativity, esp. coming from Lamborghini. Not too much money that if they tanked I'd be overly concerned, one of the newer and more reliable models, lower running costs compared to the older super series. What I didn't expect was the amount of love from the public compared to my old Lamborghini. McLaren definitely seems to be appreciated by the younger generation.
Always good to read positive posts rather than the McLaren bashing that seems to happen on a lot of forums...
Im 14 months/4k miles into 570s Spider ownership and so far so good.
Only niggle to report is the window randomly dropping half way when the door is shut. When you press the lock button it closes though so not really that much of an issue.
Mc Leeds had a go at fixing during the service and reckoned it was something to do with soft close or door alignment but wanted the car longer to investigate, I wanted the car back so not their fault it wasn't resolved.
Other than that all good... I fitted a quicksilver titanium exhaust so it sounds great now especially with roof down. LT style cracks on some down shifts too.
Only 2 issues I have:
1: trying not to drive it everywhere, its so usable and when you want a bit more drama drop the roof.
2: Now I have a want for a 600lt spider .

Just to add some balance I've had my 2016 570s since Dec 2019, covered 8k miles in that time with many early morning runouts to my favorite B roads and trackdays at Bedford and the Ring. Now I insisted on buying a car still under warranty and I've extended that warranty twice. Total repairs to this point are over £20k! Strangely enough nothing electrical the problems were mostly damper, bushing and engine related...all covered no questions asked so the warranty is bombproof. My dealer has been pretty solid at getting stuff sorted although the last one during Jan/Feb lockdown was 7 weeks but I can forgive them that as parts supply and staffing was an issue for them. It's also going in in July to have a couple of panels replaced due to corrosion.
Truthfully it's disappointing that a fairly new car would need that amount of work but despite all of that I still love it...brilliant to drive, great interactions with the public ( universally loved) and at that money 85-90k bang for buck nothing else compares. I struggle to see what I go to after this, the 720S or 600LT obvious candidates but as the performance is already blistering in the 570S the next level is a £50k jump...a game of diminishing returns for quite an outlay.

It's just another ownership cost to factor in. Even if you budget for £3k-£5k PA they are still phenomenally good value.Truthfully it's disappointing that a fairly new car would need that amount of work but despite all of that I still love it...brilliant to drive, great interactions with the public ( universally loved) and at that money 85-90k bang for buck nothing else compares. So effectively if you are thinking long term you can have a proper, full on supercar experience for 5 years, worry free for just over £100k which isn't even touching the cheapest Huracan model.

Thats nail on head for me. I paid 106k for a 570s Spider. It has the looks and performance. An equivalent Huracan Spyder would have been 160k.So effectively if you are thinking long term you can have a proper, full on supercar experience for 5 years, worry free for just over £100k which isn't even touching the cheapest Huracan model.
Then there the questionable image....there does seem to be a certain type driving about in Huracan's (or maybe that's just around my way)
ETA _ Dont get me wrong I would love a Performante or perf spyder just the cost to change is huge at the moment

Great to hear some other people having some love for the brand too!
@pioneer @curv3hunter - yep, for some reason the McLaren does get a lot of attention.... I think it's just the way it looks, almost other worldly. And I do think Lambos tend to have a certain stigma attached to them... I won't go into detail why I think that, I'm sure you've all got your own opinions there
@RSbandit Shame to hear you've had things go wrong with yours, still the exception (on this thread at least), at least they've been put right and still brings a good sense that the positives are outweighing the negatives! It's hard not to love them!
You can get some crazy finance deals on a new (from stock) 720s at the moment - or so I hear!

My 600 LT has had no issues. It was between a 488, GT3 RS, 600LT and a Huracan Performante. The 600 LT was the only new one.
All Ferrari's have the same light steering feel that you either like or don't. I don't so 488 out.
GT3 RS isn't much of a looker and lacks occasion unlike the other 3. I don't care that its faster, I'm not a professional racing driver. Also the Mclaren feels faster.
Lambo is a Lambo. I'm not sure I want the real world association although the NA engine sounds amazing and it does feel just as quick as the Mclaren.
The steering on the Mclaren is feels better than all of the others. Personally, I think the Mclaren looks the best in the flesh. So, despite all the negativity, I took a "chance" (backed up by a three year warranty!). In a way I'm glad no one wanted my one and Mclaren have a bad online reputation because I've managed to bag a brand new limited edition car without any brand history.
