So. I understand that iris1 was not with the best of functions as expected. Upgrade to iris2 seems to be a way forward getting better function.

But, is iris2 same as iris based on Android?
And, can it be done outside McLaren service center?
Or is the unit coded or does it must to be in sync with the other electronic stuff?

I believe IRIS 2 is based on Android. I would be surprised if you can get it done outside of McLaren - maybe somewhere like Thorney can do it.

I've never used IRIS 1 - so although I know it's pretty bad, I don't know how bad. But IRIS 2 isn't really all that great either!

Sorry for replying to a question with a question but did IRIS 2 come in with the 570 or 720?

It came before that - 650 has IRIS 2. In fact, I thought even some later 12Cs did, but might be wrong about that.

Note that there are differences though. When I had a 540 for a few weeks as a courtesy car, the ventilation controls were all via IRIS - whereas 650 has them on the door.

Iris 2 is android based, according to mclaren life its a Parrot system. Very annoying that you cant add apps to it, seems so strange to keep it locked.

There was a guy - on MOC I think - who hacked into it, and was promising to make it possible to add Android apps etc. And I think somebody in the States claimed to have added apps somehow too a year or two back.

It would be a massive improvement - mind you, it's flaky enough as it is so perhaps it's best left alone!

Would be incredible if it could support Apple CarPlay .... never mind.

(Iris2) I don't think its that bad tbh, it works ok if a little clunky. It stream music fine, does calls, Nav is meh but ok for major routes.

I do think the 720s is using a "Iris 3" of sorts...

I did read that with great interest, but appears to have gone quiet on the how to, seems his biggest issues was getting round the Mclaren safety software i.e when on the move allowing certain functionality.

I do have a friend who does car electronics for some interesting marques, i understand he tendered for the Mclaren systems, he will look at mine sometime when priorities allow see if he can do a work around, if i get anywhere i will let the masses know.

Absolutely right - all it needed to be was apple car play.
