650s brakes for track days
Discussion
I’m looking to do some track days on the 650s and am looking for advise from people who do track days with the carbon ceramic brakes. I’m unsure what to do, I could change the pads to the pagid RSC1 and run the ceramics or I could fit the giro disc iron conversion.
Anyone have any experience with the giro disc or any other steel conversion. The giro disc uses the standard ceramic caliper so is just a disc and pad change.
Is it worth changing the ceramics for track days or not?
Not looking for internet here say looking for advise from people who actually track the cars and have real experience.
I don’t want to wreck the ceramics after a couple of track days. Are the ceramics up to multiple track days?
Thanks if anyone has any advise.

2016 spider with 9 k miles total - tracked 7 half days, still with plenty of life on original ceramic rotors, 3 pad changes so far, 2x for the parking brake steer ones.
Will depend a lot on how you drive, of course. Once I blew away my away my PB set with an Atom, I’ve spend most of my time just enjoying the pace, practicing left foot trail braking - so not going really all in under braking.

The main issue with McLaren CC rotors is heat.
So if the pads are low and generate too much heat it pits and degrades the rotor rather than actually wearing them out.
There are many reviews on what’s the best option but other than switching the rotors out which is probably the best if you intend doing a lot of heavy tracking.
If you are doing 4-5 a year then Endless pads with OEM rotors is the sound option. Ensure you do a cool down lap, brake hard rather than gentle and change pads 2/3 worn. Should preserve the OEM rotor.

I spoke to Mclaren engineers about this and they said through choice they would have the steel discs, however the CC are ok for occasional track days, just cool them down before coming into pits, the day I was attending a 650 didn’t do a cool down lap and his brakes caught fire !
Steel also better if it starts to rain.Which is not a rare event at Spa or Brands

Well, I usually call it if it rains significantly. Habit from also having an Atom. Which is not a rare event at Spa or Brands
The whole point is to enjoy the car above 7/10ths which I can't do on the road, and which I can't do if its wet. I don't really travel far for my track days, so its no big deal. I prefer my track days like I prefer my cars. Familiar and close by
On my 600LT I run standard setup but with RSC1s, apparently better for wear too but an instant improvement in bite and feel. I did about 4 track days and the standard pads, although they had plenty of meat on them, were burnt and crumbling around the edges, glazed on the inside and the material disintegrating. Discs still look brand new!
