McLaren 720S de-clutching for no reason
Discussion
My McLaren 720S, Nov 17, 12000 miles with full dealer history has recently just de-clutched itself in traffic to give no drive.
The car was 10 minutes into a journey with handling in 'C' and powertrain in 'S'. The Gearbox mode was 'Auto' and I was running in stop-start traffic with the Gearbox changing up and down between 1st and 2nd gear. As the traffic increased speed I gently put my foot down and the revs increased quickly but with no drive. The instrument display still indicated '2A'. I released the accelerator and the revs dropped to idle. There was no response to the throttle and I coasted to a halt with 2A still displayed. I have only had this car for 1 month, and I love it BUT, and it is a big BUT, this is potentially quite dangerous if it happens in other circumstances. Has this happened to anyone else?
The car has been into McLaren Manchester for this and repeated 'suspension failure' messages but has come back with a clean bill of health. On return to me I have had 3 'suspension failure' messages in 4 engine starts on the first day back. The gearbox has not repeated its fault as yet, but I am very wary of it happening again in more challenging circumstances. Any advice gratefully received.

Thank you for that. Interesting that it has happened to someone else. I am being careful to use the car in a defensive way at present as I don't want to be overtaking and end up de-clutched. Car will be going back because of repeated ' suspension failure' messages (see other post), so will ask that this is looked at again

I actually spoke to Thorney, they have not come across this one before. The car is apparently already running all the latest software having visited Mclaren Manchester for this problem and the 'suspension failure' message in my other post. I am prepared to give it a while to see if this de-clutch issue happens again, I really hope it is an isolated incident. The 'suspension failure' msg is annoying, this one is potentially very serious and I agree that 'fit for purpose' discussions my well follow if it reoccurs.

I thought i would update anyone who is interested about the topic i posted with regard to this odd de-clutching. My car has been with McLaren Manchester for a while waiting for 4 new suspension Spheres which has sorted the 'suspension faliure' messages. (See other post). While it was there Jamie (i wnderstand him to be one of tf their specialist tech chaps who also deals with the Senna and P1) chatted to me face-to -face to try to get to the bottom of this problem. He explained at length the checks/clutch calibration/software checks he was going to do, which was reassuring. The short version of the story is the gearbox/clutch is absolutely set up as it is supposed to be but there is not an explanation for what I hope is a 'freak' one-off incident. The car is running briliantly now the suspension is doing what it should do, I will re post if the clutch misbehaves again, but so far so good. On a slightly different note I would like to thank all I came into contact with over the last few weeks at McLaren Manchester. The reception staff couldn't be more friendly and Sam (service dept) kept me well informed along the way. Hopefully this shakey start with the McLaren brand will now be something to enjoy. Thank you to you all for comments/encouragement on this post (and the suspension one)

Thanks for the update and providing what comes across as a fair and balanced view in relation to a problem.
Hope it is a one off - do keep this thread updated. Real world examples (instead of non-owners slagging the cars off) is really valuable, especially as a potential owner sometime in his life
