Have had my 12C for almost 2 years now but due to the winter months and Covid19 she has been sat in the garage (on her McLaren Trickle Charger) for the last couple of months.

Jumped back in this week now (that some restrictions have been lifted) and there is a TPMS fault showing on the dash saying "Please Visit McLaren Dealer". A quick press of the stalk and the message goes away but the Yellow warning light is still illuminated at the right hand side of the binnacle.

Have scrolled through the DIS and it still displays all tyre pressures (all correctly inflated) and tyre temperatures (these show as increasing as the tyres warm up).

Other than the Fault Message - the system appears to be working fine.

Any ideas as my nearest McDealer is about an hour and a half's drive away?

What does your type pressure screen show? If one of the reading is missing, likely a TPMS sensor. Could be an easy and cheap fix.

I've had the identical issue and symptoms through the Covid period.

Its a ferry journey for me so not going to get it done when everything works fine.

I suspect its a battery getting low in one of the sensors (so all will be going that way soon). They are providing accurate readings though.

If anyone has any further info I'd welcome it too. Thanks

All 4 corners are showing the correct pressures and temperatures so the system is working fine.

My car is an early (2011) swipe door model so the TPMS sensor batteries could be getting low due to age.

Does anyone know - can these be changed or is it new sensors?

We did swap all of the sensors over when I changed from Penis wheels (std 12C rims) to 720S wheels about 12 months ago but I can't recall what the sensors looked like or if the batteries can be replaced.

My car is still under full McLaren extended warranty (she has only done 7,300 miles from new!) so hopefully they might cover them anyway.

Indeed sounds like the batteries could be getting low. They go for 5-12 years (longer in colder climates) and are usually not replaceable. Too bad Macca didn’t go with the sensor chips my company makes - lowest power consumption. smile

As far as I know, you will need new sensors as the batteries cannot be replaced and I would be surprised if the Extended Warranty would cover them?

They are about £120 each from McLaren but you can get non-genuine from a well known internet auction site for around £35ish

My car is a 2012 (also swipe door) and as above, all the symptoms are identical.

I'd be surprised if warranty would cover this if its due to a battery running low. Consumable? For me its not practical to take the car across the sea to Scotland for sensors.

Yes that sounds like you'll need new sensors, should be covered under extended warranty.

Would be great if that is the case.

Is it only possible to get warranty work done if the car is brought in to the dealer? May seem like a silly question but when you need a full day and two ferry trips (Northern Ireland to and from Scotland) it isn't really a starter unless a significant problem. Also seems like unnecessary expense if a simple diagnosis can be done and simple parts sent and fitted third party.

Yes as they will need to 'investigate the issue' and process the claim through the warranty, once the warranty approves parts can be ordered etc. Also, sometimes the warranty ask for the faulty parts to be returned.

Have you asked a local tyre fitter? I don’t think the sensors are bespoke to McLaren.

Nice - those are the 5 spoke lightweight wheels from the 720s, in titanium liquid metal... they look great!

720S front alloys are 1/2 inch wider and both front and rear offsets are different - fitting 720S wheels is basically the same as fitting the Thorney MS spacers to a 12C without the associated risks of "spacers".

It also allows the fitment of 245 front tyres (std 720S size) in place of the 12C's 235's to give a little more front end grip.

She wears MPS4S's all round and sticks like you wouldn't believe!

I also thing that they look excellent as these are my favourite of all of the McLaren wheel designs.

Sounds good - agreed with the wheels, they are a great design. McLaren actually stopped doing the titanium liquid metal finish, it was only available on launch specs and 2018 models.

They really do look the nuts in the flesh but at £7,500 a set from McLaren they aren’t cheap!
