Discussion
I am looking for a Mclaren for around £100k and ideally a spider.
It has to be a 650 spider or 570 spider. But which?
I have driven both and although a slightly different feel both were fantastic. 570 felt a bit more "fun" but the 650 a real event when pushed.
For the price mentioned i could get a 2016 650 or a late 2017 or early 2018 570.
My feeling is that the 650 is a better proposition - more expensive car at roughly the same price and only a year older.
What are the thoughts of people who have owned both - is there a benefit of having the newer model (570) in terms of style/technology/usability or are my feelings correct.
I am sure this has been discussed before and apologies if it has but your comments would be appreciated.
Thanks

The car I would really like is a 570 with the side profile (and possibly the nose) of a 650.
The 650 has the superior performance but realistically with these type of cars it’s always marginal to the point of irrelevance. The rear and particularly the interior look a little aged to me, it looks like the rear of a 570 is largely the family backside now in keeping with the rest of the range.
I would go 570 but it sounds like you really want a 650, so for you: 650!

650S Spider is quite a rare beast. It has huge presence on the road.
Real-world performance on UK roads will be barely noticeable between them, unless in serious licensing losing territory. Suspension is similar to 720S and very compliant, making for comfortable long distance cruising. Radio, sat nav and tech are older, but then again, most people use Waze and stream music anyway.
It has crossed my mind several times that I may have made a mistake with the 720S and should have gone for a 650 Spider, pocketing the £ difference.
Most bang for your buck, the 650S is probably the best used supercar you can buy at the moment. I’d buy the 650S.

Went through this same dilemma some time (and +£30K) ago.

And after living with the 650 for a while, I think the suspension seals the deal. Keeps the car planted at all speed including on track, no bump steer (my V12V is terrible), and the leveling means my SO is happy to ride in it (a no go in the V12V)

A good dilemma and one I had 18 months ago but on a Coupe.
In the end the more modern looks and newer Monocage of the 570s swung it.
I now have a 720s but this so called magic ride on road in the super series frankly I don’t get. If anything my 570 rode better.
I would have the newer better styled 570s which may still have a bit of manufacturer’s warranty left

Maybe there is a fault with your 720s suspension. I’ve had two 570 loan cars and there is a noticeable difference with the 720S.
I'm in a similar position to the OP (but need to shift a car first) although I think I'll go for the 570 Spider rather than the 650. Main reasons are the 570 felt a bit more "modern" interior wise and I prefer the look of the rear (both personal preferences, of course - many others seem to prefer the 650 in both aspects!). The other thing pushing me towards the 570 is that I can get a newer car still under the original factory warranty and when it comes to extend it'll be cheaper than the 650.
Might still change my mind, though ...!

I looked at 650 and 570 when I bought my 650 - I chose the 650 mostly due to looks (which is of course completely subjective). I don't like the exterior of the 570 (especially the back), preferred the big analogue tacho in the 650 and didn't like the floating central display in the 570.
From a driving point of view, I had a 540C for several weeks while my 650 was back at the dealer - not quite the same, but I suspect the things I noticed would be common to the 570 too:
- Lights on my 650 are crap at night. 540 were much much better - even though they look the same, they're really not
- Doors are much better on the 540 / 570 - much easier to get in and out
- Power delivery felt much more linear and less "turbo" to me in the 540 - which for a daily car was nice. However, that might have been more to do with the mental top end of the 650
The 540 reminded me much more of the 911 turbo I had a few years back - very competent, and very useable every day (but much better looking). The 650 feels different.
I really liked the 540. I missed the roof - although that's not a problem if you're looking at 570 Spiders - but apart from that I was very impressed. On the other hand - I missed the 650 and was glad when I got it back.
Age of car has never been a big deal for me - so for similar money, I'd choose the 650 Spider. Every time I have to pay for the warranty I'll wish I had a 570 - but every time the air brake flips up I'm glad I have the 650 - and that happens more often

No fault as driven quite a few 720’s but felt no discernible difference in the ride quality on poorer roads than a 570
I am used to more hard core track cars which i sometimes use on the road but was expecting more compliance from a 720 because of the linked suspension.
Where i do think the 720s is in a different league is the way it feels bolted to the road, never vague or floaty which the 570 becomes, although the aero will contribute to this

This is the point. The 650 stays planted on my favorite weekend rutted B road ESPECIALLY with the sportier settings, where as my V12V is all over the place. On my back-to-back drive, the 570 felt closer to the V12V in that regard. Indeed no matter what you hear, don’t expect a Rolls ride - these are performance cars with carbon tubs and low profile tyres, but the suspension keeps them amazingly planted. And keeps them level, for those with SO’s tending to car sickness.
These threads always go the same way, people will try and convince you that their choice is the right one for you.
I had a 12c for over 2 years and 20 something thousand miles. I loved it deeply but deep down I knew the reviews were right. Amazing tech but missing something that they kind of ironed out with the 650 but really addressed with the 570. The playfulness and fun element!
Ultimately I didn't go the 650 route even though I love the look, mainly because the interior was identical to my 12c and on the test drive of a 570 track pack I manage to slide the car slightly pulling out of a junction in the damp. The 570 is much more controllable on the limit and lets you have more fun at lower speeds. Its setup to be like this.
You need to drive both and decide. The 650 feels almost hypercar to sit in and look at and also it feels bigger than the 570 but its not.
Enjoy the choosing!
