Hi Guys,

As the post says I am patiently waiting to pounce on a great deal on a well looked after 720S (Black, White, Dark Metallic Blue or Dark Grey).

1) I understand cars are selling well below their asking prices on auto trader etc. Can anyone give me an idea on what should be considered a great deal for a performance version vs an S with a few thousand miles?

2) Are there any must have options?

3) Is the upgraded stereo any good?

4) I have heard some cars are real lemons, anything to watch out for?

Thank you all for the help!

I'd be looking to pay 160/165k for a low miles 2019 performance.

Upgraded stereo ain't that much better imo

Not sure there's any 2019 'lemons' out there & god knows how you'd spot one!

Try finding a mid 18 onward's built car, better QC on production line so less problems and software is much improved so I'm told. Earlier cars have been a lot of hassle for owners but not all so it's a bit of a lucky dip.

Thanks for posting Ferdi!

May I ask why a 2019 and not say a 2018 performance with low mileage for £145k or £150k.

Is the performance version a must have for resale?

2019 as I'd be trying to get as new a car as poss with at least 2yrs warranty left.

I suppose a well priced 2018 car would be great too if you can get them to throw in the 4th year warranty.

Performance seems to be the more saleable model & I much prefer the alcantara interior personally.

Must have = Nose Lift. Seriously, do not buy one without a nose lift.

All the carbon fibre is just jewellery, not a necessity. V expensive to repair if it gets bumped. TBH, unless you are with a McLaren 720S geek, no one will notice the carbon anyway. The overall visual impact of the car is what people tune into.

The B&W sound system is much better than the stock system, but the stock system isn’t bad anyway.

Buy one with the silver flame logo. It's how you can distinguish the more 'fettled' up-to-date models.

Whatever the level of equipment, you won’t be disappointed.

Considering depreciation, I know this car will be with me for approx 1 year only, 2 max if I love it, is it better to go 2019 spider at around £190k or coupe at £150/£160 for a late 2018/2019?

Also in 3 weeks the LT will be announced. Will this impact 2019 lightly used values?

I am patiently waiting.

Thanks again for all the help guys!

You are not going to get any spider for that price right now. Think more along the lines of£210K minimum and £225K for a nicely specced model. I know - I have been looking.

The dealers reckon the value after 2 years would be around £140K maximum, probably less

Is any of this factual has anyone seen the data from Mclaren ?

My car was built end of April '18 build number 2155 and it has been great, a couple of stress cracked windscreens but apart from that it's been very reliable for 12K miles in fact just had second service and there was zero to do other than specified maintenance.

The general rule of thumb is after chassis number 1500, cars built after this number are supposedly better built, they have the potential to have their software updated to the same specification as the latest cars.

Good luck with your search they are amazing machines.

Following with interest as doing the same at the moment - an aspirational purchase for me and very confusing as all cars (Coupes) seem to be advertised about the same price, whether 2017-2019

Out of interest, do you have the silver flame logo?

could be worth getting the cheapest car that has warranty left on it

if you're only going to have it for a year then I wouldn't be too fussed about spec and would concentrate on not losing as much money as possible in that time

Hi - I was in the same position until last weekend - I was looking at heavily optioned ex-McLaren 2018/19 cars for about a month but dealers didn’t move much on price (say £5-6k on a £160/170k car). I got the feeling that there really wasn’t much margin in them. I ended up cutting a deal on an unregistered car (2020MY) with much less spec but in a colour combo I loved. Tempting fate but I think for the price I paid I’ll be wearing ~£50k depreciation over three years looking at values of 2017 cars.
