Hello everyone,
I am preparing the acquisition of a very recent 720S next week, my first supercar.
I have this constant little smile on my face these days, I guess you all had that too.
Dealership proposes to cover the car with a PPF from Topaz, which I suspect costs more than others.
Any real difference between competitors or is it just marketing ?

I requested a Health Check video like advised on this forum.
Any insurer you recommend ? Sometimes, insurers work with owners clubs.

Also, for those of you who go on track days with cars that are less than 3 years old, do you actually visit your dealership before and after ?
How much should you consider for those checks ?

Thank you very much for your help.

Topaz are considered one of the best but cost a small fortune and in fact a lot of the film is similar

No need to pay over for PPF so long as you use an experienced installer who fully preps car before application. There are plenty of good ones available throughout the country with recommendations from The MOC .

Manning UK provide full track day cover included in the premium with no need to pre-notify of the track day ( excludes Nurburgring) .

Some of the higher end track days do I nclude a pre and post inspection. The inspections are a bit of a grey area as if the car was to fail under track conditions which can be attributed to the car not being checked correctly then McLaren may have a good case to reject the claim but in reality the checks are precautionary and the cars are manufactured and marketed as track capable.

If you only track a couple of times of year probably worth a dealer visit if not then some common sense, a decent jack or someone capable of looking over a car may be adequate

Thank you so much for those details.
I am concerned not to lose the warranty because of a lack of declaration and I fear this may be a burden to plan the checks well ahead because of some McLaren service centers being overwhelmed.

I had my 720S Detailied / polished, PPF'd and graphics applied by Pro-Detail in Swindon. Did a fantastic job. https://www.facebook.com/prodetailuk/

Jordan is the contact.

Don't use a cut film that fits up to the to the edges, get a full PPF wrap around job for total security and fit

Dub Customs in Essex without doubt, you will get a lot more job for your money

Just done mine and several friends cars, despite the odd shapes there isn't a seam or cut in sight

Mail me if you want an intro

Ps they just rectified a Mclaren 720 that someone cocked up

Max Protect in Kings Langley....they have done a couple of cars for me. Best known for work on Porsche’s I suppose but I have seen McLaren’s in there on several occasions. They do a really excellent job.

They've done loads of cars for me including my old 650s, great job every time. My current 720 was done before I bought it & is nowhere near as good.

Cannot give Topaz enough praise.

They did a fantastic job to my LT and even other supercars owners were surprised by the overall quality.

It's all about application and at Topaz they do a top notch job.

Think about how much you really save. I've heard horror stories regarding PPF application and I've seen in person cars with PPF having several imperfections.

Not surprised when I was at Topaz there where cars going to US as well.

Congrats on the purchase, enjoy and in good health - a wonderful way to start a new year.

Be aware if you PPF as part of the purchase you pay a premium for that convenience.

Topaz are rightly highly rated and they have built up a strong reputation with repeated high levels of quality. This has allowed them to sign contracts with most dealerships - dealer recommends them and organises Topaz as part of the collection / preparation process and the dealership gets a commission which you pay for.

There are others of equivalent high quality to Topaz and the best way to find them is via word of mouth like here by asking.

For my mac, I was quoted £5+k for full body via the dealership process. I ended up organising direct with another PPF company and paid £3k.

SVJ was £4k but that is larger car and included graphics / decals.

£2k is not the dealer markups.

You can still tell the dealer you will fit PPF on your own and get a quote and job done at Topaz.

They're not cheap, but I've learnt and seen, you get what you pay for. It's all about small details that makes PPF application perfect.

Mine had an invoice in the paperwork showing it was 5k, it definitely ain't worth 5k, I'll get Max Protect to sort it in the next few months as there are areas of it that are laughable if I'm honest!

PPF is just the latest fad that dealerships are looking to profit from.

Nothing wrong with that - I certainly don’t work for free.

Finance, gap insurance, in car entertainment, Apple play, alloy wheel insurance ... PPF is just another opportunity to increase margins.

£5k+ is what dealerships quote as it clearly hooks a lot of customers when they are in that new car buying bubble.

I’ve found it consistently £5k+ for Ferrari, Mclaren, Lamborghini via dealerships.

Call it convenience premium if it helps you justify the extra £2k, because I’ve had enough cars wrapped to know there is ZERO difference in quality between the top PPF companies.

Stop talking about dealers, forget it, better to manage PPF installation on your own.

I am talking Topaz vs others.

Advice to the new 720S owner, get a quote at Topaz, go and have a look at what they do, then compare their work with other installers.

As said, I've seen in person and heard from others horror stories about car paintwork even ruined during PPF application.

Yes, I’d second this. They’d done quite a bit of work for me and are excellent. My only complaint is that they can be a bit disorganised and you really need to make sure they’re cracking on with the job.

Stu (F1 Wax) works out of their facility and is an exceptional detailer.

Sorry I’ve hit a nerve - certainly not my intention.

Only mention dealership route to PPF as the OP was explicitly asking about PPF via the dealership.

The problem anyone trying to go direct will have is if Topaz know you have already spoken to dealership about PPF, they will not then quote from the “direct” price list so you will be locked into the £5k banding.

From my experience, the extra £2k from going direct versus dealership makes no difference in quality, just hassle as you will need to organise the car transport etc.

Can’t remember the exact price per mile but the guy who transports for A Bols cost about £100 to do the transport from dealership to topaz if you organise directly.

If you're buying the car on finance, you might also be able to add the cost of the PPF installation on to your finance deal if doing through the dealer, e.g. it would prob be around £100 a month on to your monthly repayments as opposed to having to pay £5k out your pocket in one lump sum... that may suit some people.

It also means everything will be done prior to collection (you're not paying for transportation etc) and if there were any issues in the future with the PPF, you can get the dealer to sort directly for you

Yes Stu handles the detailing side, all this has been done with no joins or edges

Very pleased, full 100% coverage by Dub Customs Essex

All factory graphics removed

Paint work checked and corrected as required

Full strip of all items to facilitate a full PPF wrap so no edges are exposed or seen (stops dirt collecting and PPF lifting doing it this way,cut to pattern is the cheaper option)

All vehicle plastics including wing vents, air intakes, splitter, side sills, door handles etc removed and wrapped in Satin Black (probably all carbon on a Mac but Porsche are a bit plastic in this area)

Headlamps PPF'd

Windscreen PPF'd with special material

All logos then re made and fitted as required (plus a few extras)

Interior treated

Then exterior sealed for hydrophobic qualities

People have looked at it and don't believe that it has had PPF biggrin

You don't want to apply PPF after the car has been driven as it will already have accumulated stone chips. Arranging the PPF through the dealer has the advantage that they can apply the PPF even before the PDI drive test. I used Topaz twice via a dealer and cannot fault them, but they are indeed expensive.
