Standard exhaust vs sports exhaust 570S Spider
Discussion
I would like some feedback regarding the difference between the standard exhaust and sports exhaust fitted to a 570S Spider. I am going to see a car later this week, and it is fitted with a standard exhaust. However, virtually all of the other cars I have seen advertised are fitted with the Sports exhaust option. I know it's subjective, but does the Sports exhaust sound that much better than the standard offering? Could it be a deal breaker?
I have sports exhaust on my 650 but I'm pretty sure the 540 courtesy car I had last week didn't.
It was noticeably quieter - but since I use the car as a semi daily, that was actually quite nice most of the time.
I think I'd still prefer sports overall, but for a good car not sure it would be a deal breaker for me.

I've got the standard on my 540C and actually quite like it. I was tempted to change it for a sport exhaust but it just makes more noise. I didn't think it sounder particularly better, just louder.
I wouldnt see it as a deal breaker either way as McLaren will fit one for you aftermarket. Or even MSO if you want

Thanks for the feedback, makes me feel a bit better! The reason I asked is that I won't be able to drive the actual car due to it being new and unregistered stock. I will, however, be testing one of their other spiders which will more than likely have the sports exhaust fitted.I wouldnt see it as a deal breaker either way as McLaren will fit one for you aftermarket. If the rest of the spec is right, I wouldn't be put of by the exhaust either way. Much easier to change an exhaust to the right car, than change the colour/options of the wrong car.
I'd say the standard exhaust is quite quiet inside the car, but my neighbours claim they can hear me coming before they see me so it can't be totally quiet on the outside

A few points to add:-
- The coupe seams to be very well sound-proofed so my 570s coupe always sounded muted from the inside, but people who hear it from the outside seam to think is sounded great.
- In the spider, you have the ability to drop the rear window (or the whole roof of course) so you will naturally be able to hear the exhaust more than you would in the equivalent coupe.
- The 'standard' exhaust on the 570s is actually the 'sports' exhaust option on the 540c and 570GT. Then there is the 'sports' exhaust option on the 570s, then the louder-still MSO exhaust option.
- I swapped the 'standard' 570s rear exhaust section to a Larini rear section, it made the exhaust slightly louder without it being intrusive although the most significant change was that I can hear the turbo whistle more now than I could before.
Overall though, they are brilliant cars so do let us know how you get on and very best of luck with the purchase.

What you really really want is the titanium MSO option, a £4640 option which sounds fantastic.
It’s available with chrome silver of chrome black exhaust tips, had it on my 570 spider from the factory, made the car.
I had the sport exhaust on my first 570 and confirm that the MSO option on my latest car is superb!!!It’s available with chrome silver of chrome black exhaust tips, had it on my 570 spider from the factory, made the car.
I've got a sports exhaust on my 12c. I live on a 1 acre plot and my neighbor is the same - I'm guessing they are roughly 30m away from my car.
Even so, I've had to limit myself to not starting up before 07.30am last summer as it wakes everyone in my house .... and next door !
I've also got motorbikes that are quite noisy as well - but it's the car that seems to cause the most reaction. I think it's down to the amount of air a 3.8 Litre displaces versus 1290 or 690 cc
I cant compare to std as I've only had the sports option - subjectively though, I think the sound is the same, just with more volume.

Based on the previous comments, sounds like the standard exhaust will be fine for me! However, I'm sure I recall a post somewhere that mentioned an annoying "drone" while at cruising speed. Can't remember which car or exhaust system is was related to.
I've run my 570s on plenty of long trips, both with the standard exhaust and with the Larini rear exhaust. Neither 'drone' at any speed, it's always been an epic long distance car Gassing Station | McLaren | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
