Will I lose my shirt on a 650?

I'd like to buy a 650S Spider now, whilst waiting for the 720 version to be launched, but fear I'll lose my shirt on a nearly new 650 over the next 12-18 months......there seem to be a few that have been on sale now for as much as 3 months and they don't appear to be shifting.....as the 720 cars begin to come off the production line, I sense the prices of the 650s will fall dramatically......but I'm happy to bow to the superior knowledge of you expert McLaren market observers.....(PS I do expect to suffer some depreciation!)
I'd really like a McLaren too... but there's a particularly high risk of steep depreciation on these cars. If they haven't sold for months, that means they are worth less than their pricetag but the seller isn't for moving.
McLaren only make one model of car, but they quickly come out with an improved version or a cheaper version. They are on record saying they will come out with 15 new models starting with the 720S by 2022. That's about 3 a year. At least half will be hybrid. It's certain the 720S will gain a hybrid version, suddenly a 650S is looking a lot like a 12C.

You won't lose much at all on a 650s around £165-£170k...........a decent spec 720s will be £240k+......the early flipped cars will be £275k+ (already a PH advert for circa £300k!).........12c coupes will stick around £110k-£130k and have done for years....12c Spiders £125k-£145k.....650s Coupes £145k-£165k......650s Spiders £160k-£180k.............prices will varying depending on spec and miles etc but I don't see the above changing for another 12-18 months at least.......720s' will need to be close to £200k before they put pressure on 650s prices, which won't be for a good while!

Absolutely right. If anything the launch of the new 720S might bring prices up as the initial sold out launch stock allocation are high spec expensive units in small numbers that if get flipped will trade at a premium for the first 12 months which is a first for a regular production McLaren.The limited edition 675 LT's traded at a massive premium but in the past the regular production car like 12C/650S took a big hit from new list price.
Once they found their place in the used car market their prices have been very stable and selling regularly at sensible asking prices.
12C prices bottomed out and rebounded strong and look good residual wise for a 5 year old car. these will always underpin the improved 650s prices so I think the downside is minimal for a nearly new 650S. Budget to say lose £10k but that's hardly losing your shirt stuff.
I lost £23k in 11 months and a 1,000 miles on an Audi RS4 - that's losing your shirt relatively speaking
3 months is not unusual for supercar sales especially when you consider that some of the other brand supercars are seemingly overpriced and still advertised 12 - 18 months down the line.
Nothing comes remotely close to a 650S at the £180k price point IMHO and what you get for your money is simply staggering. Worth every penny and more IMHO. The quality of product is industry leading and the beauty is you are not CURRENTLY paying over the odds just for the badge.
Bargain supercar of the moment so buy one and enjoy it and if you are lucky it wont cost you a bean

I sold my 2012 12c last September for £126k............good cars are still selling for good money and will continue to do so........Go and ask someone like Bols or any other independent. Main dealers probably won't even touch a 12c now...

Sensible miles, good spec, nice colour = good money and not a long time to sell. At worst you would take £15k off the private sale price for a trade bid which even with my maths is mmmmmmm 126 -15 = 75 McLaren Orange

12c and 650S will not be effected by 720s in the slightest. 720 is only coupe for the next 2 years so McLaren spiders will be in short supply with early 570S spiders already securedAgree 675 LT is the most likely to be effected as they are currently at a big premium over list so this may soften a bit

Colchester Ferrari called and offered to buy it out right for £114k...........warranty is transferable when selling privately and people needing finance can buy privately with an inspection or you can get an invoice drawnup by dealers like Lawton Brook if required........just can't take PX...well you can but not if you need the cash back in the car.................trading/selling a car to a dealer may be the easier option, if like having your trousers yanked south......I don't think thats isolated to only McLaren though.....Doh back to infant school for you young man

Top colour and spec for resale, but September was a long time ago and things have now changed. The 540/570 is readily available, and demand and prices for the 12c have weakened. McLaren Orange

And this discussion was about trade bids for the 12c, so your £126k sale price is irrelevant. The trade would not pay more than £100k for this top spec/colour car with just 12knmiles. Everything else would get a lesser bid. Fact.
