Hi all. I've currently got a 458 italia and am toying with the idea of moving to a 650S spider. (McLaren is the only soft top I'm interested in due to the carbon tub as I hate scuttle shake).

I have a few random questions:

1. Has anyone moved from a 458 to a 12C/650? The sound on the 458 is glorious and a large part of the driving experience. Just wondered if anyone has made this or a similar move and had any thoughts on what they missed (especially sound) or loved?

2. McLaren have a "vehicle tracking system". Any idea who the actual providers are? Is it Vodafone/cobra Navtrak (who seem to cover a lot of manufacturers).

3. How long is the original warranty and is it transferable?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Havent owned a 458 but driven them plenty of times and weighed up buying one before my 650S spider so probably can answer your questions :

1. Sound - For me the sound of car is a very important part of the experience hence why I have a Capristo exhaust on the F355 GTS.
When I assessed all the pros and cons of both vehicles this was probably the one area where I though the 458 had a slight advantage with it being a N/a V8. I do find the 458 sound a bit artificial compared with say my 430 Scuderia and F355 but I still liked the way it cut in low down on the valves which some people don't like.
As far as the McLaren goes for a turbo charged car it sounds epic but different. Mine has a sport exhaust which is loud but does not drone at all and really sounds great when pressing on. Yes it does burble and pop but not to same extent as a 458.
If it did not sound good I would not of bought the car simples so I do not think you will be disappointed with a 650s with sports exhaust. It actually sounds best with the roof up but the rear window down as the wind noise is cut out.

2. Tracker is a cobra navtrak which has been recently taken over by Vodafone. From memory I have just paid £215 for an annual renewal as the discount for 3 years is not large enough. So confident am I that the car is a keeper If they had offered it for life I would of paid a £1000 upfront probably but it was not an option.

3. Maunfacturer Warranty is 3 years and transferrable

If you are looking to upgrade your 458 Italia a 650S spider is the natural choice and I can assure you you will not be disappointed in anyway at all. I would just say its different and you need to drive them a few times to really get it.
The more I drive mine the more I love it and realise how superior to the Ferrari it is.

I absolutely agree with you on the carbon tub thing as well. Scuttle shake use to really annoy me on every drive but the McLaren is so solid and rigid, the build quality is amazing and in a different league to Ferrari.
Once you have driven a McLaren spider you will never have another supercar spider without a carbon tub

My unbiased advice is to get a 650s spider, its the supercar bargain of the moment along with 12C but these prices will not stay like this forever as the McLaren Brand rapidly gains momentum.

Just for everyone else out there - its a future classic roflwhistle

I been in a few 458s and driven occasionally - the 12c/650s revs to 8.5K so you still get the wail, plus the spiders have a rear window that drops down - so you can better hear the noise (mines got a sports exhaust) - it sounds great however no match for the v8 crescendo of a Ferrari

Vodafone/cobra - same company now

3 year - yes transferable and extendable

Thanks for your thoughts!
I know someone looking to get out of a 650s spider (high spec/ green) can put you in touch if you want
