Hi chaps

I understand from numerous articles and discussions that the original IRIS system wasn't great, and IRIS 2 was an improvement.

From images I've seen, V2 involved a hardware swap to a unit with a four screen printed buttons without indents on the top two.

However when looking at a number of cars recently with a view to buy, I've come across what looks like I2 hardware but advertised as an "IRIS upgrade". When I asked one dealer if this was I2 they responded, "no its just an upgrade, not I2".

It seems to me that there is a version that isn't I2 but looks like I2!! (Hope you follow that!)

Is there an intermediate hardware version, or something else, if so what's that like? Any help to remove the confusion appreciated.

Also has anyone negotiated an upgrade in a purchase with a main dealer??

Cheers

Your description is accurate. Upgrade = software update to original iris, which most owners report as a moderate improvement but leaving it still workable only in one mode at a time with glitches and bugs etc still present. Iris 2 = hardware update with software also updated = works perfectly in multinfunctions at same time (in my case anyway)

Far as I know, there's only two hardware versions, which look as you describe, and no intermediate halfway house. Some dealers fudge it a bit by saying the IRIS has been updated, but that just means the IRIS1 has the latest software, which is still rubbish.

Iris 1 = Not great

Iris 1 Software Update = slightly better

Iris 2 Hardware Update= Cost £2700 and is slightly better again but still not perfect apparently.

I have Iris 1 with the software update. I can see why people wouldn't have been happy with it as mine has frozen a few times etc but mine isn't a daily driver so I don't need mine to navigate me, stream music and connect my phone via bluetooth. I'd consider paying the £2700 for Iris 2 but given the reports from lots of people saying that even Iris 2 isn't perfect, I'm content with what I have........I wouldn't let a car with Iris 1 put you off and conversely I wouldn't assume that a car with Iris 2 will be perfect either...

I thought the full Iris 2 upgrade was about £8K but dealers were initially offering it at a significant discount but this offer has now finished?

No.

It's £2,700-ish supplied and fitted.

I wouldn't pay that, let alone £8k, just to connect my phone and stream music at the same time............

As above I think that deal has finished now unless you have spoken recently

I spoke to a dealer around October last year and they quoted around the £2700 mark. No mention of it shooting up in price at any point in the future.

IRIS II is fantastic and I cant fault it on my MY15 spider.
I've just had a platform 9.5 and clutch cooler pipe upgrade when the car was in for its 1st service but not entirely sure how they could improve it based on my experiences TBH

Gents, many thanks for the clarification, it may not be a deal breaker for me, but the sales person did not sound particularly convincing with their explanation over which version the car had or also why an AC display in one of the doors was dim (another known problem on some cars).

Haven't quite found the ideal car yet, if I do... and it has Iris1 I may try and negotiate a swap as part of the deal. If it is an £8K upgrade now then that will be unlikely! (Cost to them a lot less of course) Maybe also time to get my old TomTom out!

Just need a few new cars to come up for sale...

The displays on the 2012 cars doors do go dim --- I had one replaced under warranty and a couple of weeks later (then out of warranty) the dealer came to my home to replace the other --- because McLaren had said that the other would go dim in time and the two should match ! Class act ...

Iris 2 is around 3k to retrofit. The latest version, at least on a 570s, just works - unlike Iris 1 which was terrible.

Have my Iris2 a thorough thrashing just to see if I got get it to go wrong. Nope. All good. I was sat naving, streaming Spotify and had a usb device plugged in at the same time. It's actually a really nice designed system. Very easy to use. Probably slightly slicker and easier to use than my AUdi A8 system to be fair.

It sounds like a fairly inexpensive fix for one of the biggest frustrations of the 12c ... I always listen to radio 4 business news just after 7am. When it doesn't (didn't) work it was a real frustration because this sets the tone for my day ...
