Lamborghini have done the same with Italian Police, perhaps other car-makers as well.
It's just a bit of harmless fun. One could even imagine that it would make Sussex Trafpol marginally more sympathetic towards a McLaren driver who was exceeding the speed limit but driving well.
As for whether McLaren are getting into bed with the SCP, that seems unlikely. I think it's more likely that McLaren were taking a page out of the playbook of President Lyndon B. Johnson. He used to say about his political rivals, "I'd rather have him inside the tent pissing out, than outside the tent pissing in."

I am a 650S owner, bought new from McLaren London in March this year. On the whole, I am really pleased with the car.
I attended the Goodwood Festival of Speed in late June and was somewhat surprised to see a white 650s done up in police livery on a stand run by the Sussex Safety Camera Partnership. I initially thought that the police 'cuts' didn't seem to prevent them from owning a £200k+ car....but then wondered whether the car had been confiscated as a proceed of crime?
Neither were particularly positive associations. Upon approaching the stand, I then noticed that the car ( fully police stickered livery and lights on roof etc) had a sign in the window "Kindly loaned by McLaren".
This is where I would appreciate some other opinions. Any other owners thrilled to see "their" car dressed up as a cop car in a public venue? Does anyone think that this is a positive association ?
Secondly, what thoughts McLaren supporting the "Sussex Safety Camera Partnership"?
I have been in correspondence with McLaren and it is probably fair to say that they have no idea of what I am on about.
Thoughts please?
I'm going to be honest I just can't understand where you are coming from with this.I attended the Goodwood Festival of Speed in late June and was somewhat surprised to see a white 650s done up in police livery on a stand run by the Sussex Safety Camera Partnership. It's just a gimmick for the Festival, a bit of harmless fun, how could it have any negative impact on your ownership of a Mclaren?
Completely baffled by this.
I think you made an interesting point. (I read your post where someone quoted it)
Let's be honest, marketing teams are far from infallible, so there's no reason a partnership or sponsorship may be sub-par.
Ultimately though, I think associations with British celebs like the Essex or Geordie shore shows - even if it's just a photo of one of the 'stars' driving the car - is far more damaging than this little stunt.
