New McLaren 650S
Discussion
Well, I'm not too worried. I like the look of the existing 12C and I doubt the technology on the 650S will be massively different. No doubt more power and some chassis improvements too will make the new car just fantastic. Not that the 12C needs more power but I wonder if the mechanical upgrades will be available to existing owners?
Seen it at MTC today. Hate to sound flakey but not sure what I think. Its a 12C evolution (12c discontinued etc etc), and has been improved imo with a more P1 like front end, a rear end more like the GT3 version, and a totally different style of side intakes (essentially they're now covered on the front side, which the car at the factory had in carbon and looked superb.
As a long standing fan of the 12c I'm sure I'll enjoy this too... its not as different as I'd have hoped frankly, then again its a damned sight more different than that ridiculous Ferrari California T that they released yesterday....

Did they say the 12C is discontinued to you today at the MTC? The latest press release seemed to suggest the standard 12C is continuing in production contrary to the earlier reports. As a long standing fan of the 12c I'm sure I'll enjoy this too... its not as different as I'd have hoped frankly

Wow, thats the biggest description anyone has dared to give who has saw the car. You mean P1 front with regards to bumper or the vents in the bonnet? As a long standing fan of the 12c I'm sure I'll enjoy this too... its not as different as I'd have hoped frankly, then again its a damned sight more different than that ridiculous Ferrari California T that they released yesterday....
I also heard the 12C lives on but they needed room to build this 650S so production halted??
I was told that 12C production has stopped, and that deliveries of the new car will commence in the next couple of months in both coupe and spider guises (the spider was on show today). Sounds like the press will be given the shots/spec in the next day to two, and then it'll be on show at Geneva
Its the overall look of the front end that evoked memories of the P1 for me. Its not the vents, more the lights and bumper. I'd be being unfair calling the car a 12C with a P1 front and GT3 rear but if you think that you'll get my drift. The interior was almost unchanged from the 12c. If, like me, you preferred the 12c to the 458 then this will simply be another reason to take that preference to the next level....if the opposite view then I'm not sure a great deal will change now. Its strictly evolutionary.
It looked slightly shorter than the 12c too to my eyes, although this might just be the front overhang as I suspect dimensions are almost identical.
Have to say I never tire of going to the MTC. Its just a hell of a place. The staff are as friendly as can be, the whole place is Bond-like in how it functions. Immaculately dressed staff, doors that slide open as you wave you hand in front of them. They asked very nicely for phones to be left outside at which point they were placed in a little plastic bag, personally labelled, that looked like it could probably survive an attack that knocked out every other mobile in the UK.

They also say there will be a base version and one with a "carbon kit".
Here are the first photos of the new McLaren 650S - as you can see, not a wide departure from the current 12C but for those who had issues with the styling I think it will be seen as more appealing.
