I'm utterly astonished that the site holds together at all with a Jet database considering the amount of traffic there must be..

Do let me know if you want to look at moving to SQL, Ted.. I have migration experience (and some dodgy CDs )

Yep. So am I!

Only problem seems to be resource leakage.

SQL Server migration is in the pipeline, just a matter of scheduling some time to do it and sort out the financing etc.
