Err, I am having constant problems posting messages. Either I can be paranoid about this (as in not allowing me to post messages) or there is something more seriously wrong. Using either IE 5.5 or Opera 6.01 I get default error messages from the browser when I press the Post New Topic message....

A real pain in the bum when I attempt to post a long message. In fact it is driving me round the bend as I wish to contribute or ask questions.... Anything wrong - did it this morning for over 3 hours....

Cheers,

Paul

Paul,

Sorry you're having problems. When you say 'default' error messages, what do you mean?

Sees to be dependant on thread but I get a "Connection closed" pop-up dialog box in Opera and a "Page unavailable" error in IE. Both responses are almost imeadiate and not in line with the time it takes to post a message properly (as you would expect).

I am on the end of an NTL cable modem connection so speed and time online are irrelivant so I am puzzled as to the problem. I tried posting a new thread under the Chimaera group earlier all morning but completely failed.... doesnt matter now as spoken to an independant, but would have been nice to post a couple of questions...

Doesnt seem to be relevant to message size either - I am a fast typer but it does affect small as well as long messages..

any ideas?

Cheers,

Paul

First time I've heard of anything like that. I suspect it may be a problem with NTL caching pages? Anyone got any ideas?

We don't have NTL but do have Blue Yonder. I don't have any problems with PistonHeads, but I have a complete nightmare with Hotmail, which kind of defeats the object. I must confess I suspected it might have something to do with the connection...

... No much help am I...

I'll get me coat.

Just done it again - this is getting painful - IE gave a page unavailable error message. This was in the "New S2000 vs used Boxster" thread under general gassing...

Stupid point but if you have the Advanced Options Security SSl etc.. flagged then that causes some problems on my PC, as it seems does having Flash player installed.. No idea why but that just seems to be the way it is

Paul,

I'd instantly expect NTL's transparent caches. When I use them, I have to reload time and time again to get certain pages to display. A friend runs a private proxy and I use that most of the time with no problems at all.

As for alternative proxy suggestions, I can't help I'm afraid.

I am also at the end of an NTL cable modem and if this messge comes through I am obviously not having any problems...

However, I am using a Linux based router (DX2-66!) to connect the modem to my LAN, but I don't think this acts as a proxy (all going a bit over my head from this poini)- is that any help!?!

Only problems I have with the site is Opera not opening the piccies on a page into a larger format in a new window, where IE will, but thats not exactly a biggie.

Do you have Javascript turned on?

Your linux router won't make any difference - you're still going through a transparent NTL cache. It may be that some of their caches are better than others and that it depends where you are as to how well they work.

Opera also has options to refuse to open pop-up windows - that could be another reason why the images don't appear.

ah ha,

turning pop-ups off option - hmmm may have played with that as it seemed a good idea at the time.

Will have a furtle round with the Opera settings when I get home (not that I am posting from work of course!)

Thanks chaps.

BTW I seem to be able to post with ease, but then the NTL (ex Diamond cable) network in Nottingham seems to be a little more robust than in other areas.

Ah, seem to have found a common link - the adverts in the top corner. Wait long enough (like typing a big message) and they will refresh - I guess by a HTTP PUT. Anyway, if the message is short enough before the advert cycle then fine - no problems.

Long messages, well just get an error.... Any ideas. I think that Marshy is correct though - transparent proxies at NTL are causing problems. Funny thing was that I tried to enter a support call on their web site and got the same error - pulling hair out now!!

Paul

Sorry to scupper that theory Paul but the adverts aren't on a refresh cycle. The advert you get when the page loads is the advert that stays there.

Do "view source" on the offending page and have a look in the META tags near the top of the page for a refresh line or some such.. or a javascript open.window type call..

Oh & Proxomitron can stop page reloads which might sort it out...

Paul, (and anyone else on NTL)

If you explicitly set your browser proxy to point at your nearest NTL proxy, life should improve by all accounts.

I can't remember the site that tells you your closest NTL proxy, but if you search for NTL, "Cable Modem FAQ", and "Robin Walker" in Google, it should come up.

If I find it when I'm next delving through the NTL support newsgroups, I'll post a link.
