Please please please can we have some new rules

Rule 2. Use of the word "loose" when "lose" was intended - 1 month ban

Rule 3. Use of the word "break" when "brake" was intended - 12 month ban (well it is a car enthusiast website after all)

Rule 4. unless its me, in which case it was just a typo and its OK

Its driving me nuts. Sad I know.

Unnecessary apostrophes get a lifetime ban; absence of apostrophes is only 6 months. See you in June. Except ... see rule 4.

You are misunderstanding rule 4. I'm afraid.

I was the perpetrator, therefore, it counts as a typo, I can do it as often as I like its still a typo.

I can't speak for the OP, but I find it difficult to read something when it has incorrect spelling and/or poor grammar. Nothing to do with how little I have to worry about!

Agreed, it wasn't a moan it was only a bit of fun (hence the absurd penalties), however, there was a serious point behind it:

1. I love language and to see it dumbed down and trivialised like this is frustrating;

2. this is a text-based discussion forum. The primary medium we have for communication is the written word, accordingly its rather important that what is written follows generally understood and accepted conventions.

Clearly there will always be typos and errors, I couldn't care less about those, but the three I listed are absolutely rife and not just here unfortunately.

I agree to an extent with what you're saying & txt speak is a definite no no for me as I just don't understand it, so I just don't read the thread & so don't reply. There's a possibility that I could of replied or even helped in some way so the poster may may not have got a helpful reply because of txt speak, his loss & not mine.

Also although this is 2009 some people do struggle with spelling & grammar. I know this because I do & although I use a spell checker with Firefox sometimes words slip through, mainly words that are pronounced the same but have a different meaning & spelling. Grammar is the most difficult thing for me though & I do struggle with it.

Not so long ago some dick head on here called me an ignorant tt, or words to that effect, because I'd made a minor grammatical error, something that didn't affect anybody's understanding of what I'd written. People like him are the ones that need shooting at dawn, not the people like yourself who I think just want to see at least some sort of minimal standard upheld.

I'm not advocating text speak and I avoid it myself. Honestly though, I find it hard believe a grown adult can't understand it. It's essentially playing to the natural way we as humans read is it not?

I know the OP wasn't being totally serious. It just gets a bit dull when there's so many over the top "they ought to be shot" type rubbish posted about something so innocuous. Look after your own grammar, punctuation and spelling and that of your kids. I genuinely don't think there's any point in stressing about strangers levels of grammatical competence!
