Just happened to be looking at various site stats including some that I develop and see that year on year May 08/09 our favourite entertainment seems to have lost 1/3 of its 'unique visitors'. Anyone care to venture why this might be and what it really means? Is it just getting too tame here?

The graph uses data from compete.com. This is accurate for US sites but in my experience is pretty poor at estimating European traffic. As far as I know traffic continues to grow (last figure I saw was 2.7m monthly uniques).

This graph is similar to the internal reporting we have here too for the US visitors. For UK it has been steadily growing with a 138% increase YOY for May.

I have no idea how all these are counted, but would it make a difference if I used www.petrolheads.com rather than www.pistonheads.com

Not really as these both point to www.pistonheads.com which is the main domain name for the site.
