These pop up ads are becoming really annoying now.

I appreciate what you wrote in the FAQ and understand completely the situation you are in.

However, I've been online 10 minutes, looked at 2 threads (including this one) and seen that Damn A6 Runout thing 3 TIMES!

I have also seen some other thing which I closed before I could read it twice, and an E-bay thing Twice.

I have also looked at the AA website while I've been on, so either one or both of the sites are inundating me with PUA's.

You said something about cookies in the FAQ, I use cookies etc but still they pop-up.

Is this you or me??

Cheers
Stuart.

I only get the Audi one twice at the start of my session and the Jeremy Clarkson one occasionally.

Same here, Audi twice Jezza occasionaly.
I'd suggest some use of "Spybot search + destroy" or Lavasofts "Ad-aware" would help, might be some "Malware" found it's way onto your system.

Don't get them on netscape, no pop up blocker on. Do on explorer. Ooops shouldn't have said that.

I whole heartedly agree with all the comments about Audi Pop-ups. This is the piece I submitted earlier today (admittedly to General Gassing in error), but it somhow got lost?

"Why do we have to have those bl**dy annoying Audi pop-ups all the time. They irritate the hell out of me and lots of other people too I expect.

I have tried sending them eroneous data hoping that that will be the end of it. But it keeps on coming back. I have tried to find a way of switching it off, but no luck so far (MS Windows XP Pro - advice please)

Is Audi highjacking Pistonheads? Or is this happening with someones approval. If P/H's are being paid by Audi - its not worth it, you are pi**ing off all your loyal members.

I have checked the forums sites. Audi (all models?) has had 284 replies which is pathetic, whereas the count for TVR alone is 183,576

I rest my case"

come on guys, they're not that annoying!!

if it helps generate a few quid and keeps the site free, then I'm more than happy to tolerate them...

And I'm sure that you would all quite happily go to work if you weren't being paid too....

Fact 1. This is Ted's job. It isn't a hobby. He probably spends more hours a week working on it than most of us spend in our offices.

Fact 2. He doesn't charge any of us to use the site.

Fact 3. He isn't a charity (although he always buys his round in the pub).

Fact 4. If he didn't have the ad revenue, he couldn't afford to buy me beer when we go out.

I think that 4 is the important one myself

I'm not disputing there existance. Ted has to pay his mortgage and all the rest of it somehow, and with the number of members constantly on the rise, the money to keep the site going has to come from somewhere.

The problem is that they appear all the time, I keep on seeing the A6 Runout thing. I see it more than all the rest.
Once a Day, yeah fine, twice I can live with, but not all the time.

If they really are causing that much annoyance to you, there is an easy whay to get rid of them ......... Don't look at PH !!!. Second best - don't close them down - they will just sit in the background as you continue to surf.

Mike.

I will be implementing measures of my own to cap the number of popups for people as I do appreciate that it is annoying if you are getting more than the two intended. The cookie based mechanisms don't work for everyone.

Technical issues aside, I've said all I've got to say regarding the use of popup ads to fund the site.

if its that bad use a decent pop up blocker - I also found the audi one a bit too frequent a visitor on screen - since I installed the blocker all is fine

I wont recommend any blockers on the thread as advertisers presumably wouldn't be over joyed !!

I'm getting used to them now - this being about the only site I visit regularly that has them. I wouldn't mind if they appeared in the same place, though. The one that pops up in the top left hand corner obscures my "back" button and I sometimes click the wrong thing by mistake!

I was having a problem until I added pistonheads to my list of "you can cookie" me sites in ie - since then I get 1 or 2 popups a session - this I can handle.

What I tried before this was to minimise, but leave open the pop-up window but this did not work, but it will in other sites.

Ted - as a suggestion you could check if the pop-up window already exists before opening a new one and if so not create new one, i've got used to doing this on other sites and am happy with it where cookies don't work or are not implemented.

Cheers

Paul

Unfortunately I'm not always in control of the popped up window. I can control whether to trigger it (and have implemented my own capping system on top of those from the advertisers) but I can't control the scrpt that is called.
