Members Online?

Hi Ted, how about a visual counter of the number of members online at any point in time.

Better even (or in addition!): a little indicator, a LED-type image in front of the profile name of the poster, if red user is offline (not logged in to PH), if green, user is logged in.

Not so sure about that. It could make the place look misleadingly dead at times which isn't a good thing.

It could also increase posts. If you know that 3 people in a thread are online you'll stick around a bit longer, just in case they reply. If you don't know whether they're online anymore or not, you'll just check it the next day or whatever.

I think every member (ok, say 99%) would find this functionality useful.
