Perfectly good thread - very very informative re: a car i sold being in an accident shortly after etc, gets binned for the use of the phrase "ethnically challenge" used to point out the he would be easily identifiable from myself.

I have shown alot of support for the way this site is moderated in the past. but the information contained in this thread was extremely useful stuff, to anyone involved in an incident of this type - especially the postings from madcop.

But rather than remove a single item from the thread the whole thread gets binned.

Sorry guys much as i like PH if this is the way it is going count me out.

Patrick, I agree that it was a particularly informative thread which is why I've reinstated it with the relavent stuff retained.

However, you know you're stepping over the line indicating that someone is 'challenged' because of their origin.

PH is a multi-cultural community - what sort of reaction did you expect when making remarks like that?

Patrick,

I sympathise with your annoyance at the thread being closed, but for once I agree with Ted ! Your chosen phrase could be viewed as racist by some and that's enough to make it unnacceptable....

Don't leave us mate, your posts always crack me up!!

And anyway, I'm the only one who can threaten departure here, I've had more comebacks than Lazurus!!

While we are on the subject, I have noticed over the last few months that certain moderators wield the THREAD CLOSED axe far too much rather than bin a post that people may find offensive. I may get shot down over this but some of the power that has gone to certain people has gone to their heads....

Have a nice time flaming me for that in the moderators forum guys, but if you think about it, I do have a point....

I don't think, moderators have personal problems with the moderated contributor, but with misinterpretations, a post or a sentence might cause by readers who actually haven't read much on Gassing Station

Marki, do you mean, some moderations could be misinterpreted as well? Then yes.
Shows that the moderators are mortal as well, but all in all moderation on Gassing Station looks very effective, especially because (dont't want split anyone here) older members (not only moderators) guide threads into the right direction whenever possible and necessary, prior to get them binned or locked

IMHO the moderations get more adjusted, the more experience the moderators have, and moderation on Gassing Station is quite new, so let's see what the time will bring, and feedback as often as possible

Guys, they have a difficult job to do and they are doing it as volunteers. It will take time to judge the best way to deal with issues in each forum as each place has its own characters and different tone.

Taking digs at them isn't very helpful and doesn't achieve much. If you've got any issues with what happens then mail me, but let's stop this public sniping as it only serves to undermine them and create an atmosphere of 'us and them'.

I'm a bit miffed that what I said was misconstrued in this way. I was pointing out my opinion that's all. I happen to think that several of the moderators get a kick out of closing threads.

What I was trying to say is that on several occasions it would have been more pertinent to BIN a post rather than close the thread. I wasn't sniping at, or indeed criticising anyone in particular, especially as one or two of the moderators are friends of mine!!

Obviously we are not allowed to question "The Gods"... or in this case even make a helpful suggestion like "why not use the "binned" icon more often?"

I'll give you an example. If some posts had been left up with "binned" on rather than completely deleted then people can see someone has done something annoying. If they are just wiped out or the thread is closed we end up with the mayhem we had last week. No-one wants that especially me as I ended up copping a load of crap over it.

Someone tell me I'm making sense for once??

Flash, you are making sense for once.

I am new to this lark and I agree if I had binned some of those posts that you were refering to rather than deleting them, I agree maybe it wouldn't have got so out of hand.

But as always we live and learn.

While we are on the subject I thought I will add my 2p worth.

Someone was shot down in flames recently for suggesting another PHer was gay. That 'gay' PHer was in fact a married couple who both post under the same PH name. They were cracked up with laughter at being accused of cross dressing but others took offence - not having the intelligence to look beyond the veneer. I would hate everything I say on PH to be taken at face value.

I think part of the problem we're running into here is the diverse nature of the different forums. Each has its own character and what is acceptable in some forums is not appropriate in others. Also with so many people on here these days we certainly can't please everyone all the time.

Makes for an interesting read every day
