Later this afternoon the whole site will go into read only mode. This is to allow me to copy all the data over to the new server.

The new server will then go online. Hopefully you should be able to see the server reasonably quickly. Minimal interruption to normal service is planned.

Fingers crossed

Now that there is a new, faster, bigger server. How about a problems thread: where people can post their car problems, possiably a 'live chat' so problems can be resolved quicker.

Car problems in General Gassing. Sorry, no live chat for reasons I've outlined before.

Nice one Ted

An obvious improvement, even with broadband. Does this mean that lunchtime traffic jams will be reduced?

Completed with no congestion charge - that's what I like to see!

Good work fella!

I've still got about half the traffic going to the old site at the moment so don't celebrate too soon.

That said, this box is more than twice as powerful as the old one, so the lunch time log jam should be over.

Congratulations on, what appeared to be, a very smooth transition. It appeared "effortless", well done.

Just a note; the first page of the chimera adverts is missing a number of photo’s; not sure if it’s related but just to let you know in case you were not aware.

Anyway, a remarkable difference already, even on broadband.

Cheers

I've also moved the server to a new hosting service (www.carrenza.com) which is run by a PHer. This will give me an easier upgrade path in future as I'll be able to install extra equipment without going through some of the hurdles I've had to previously.

The traffic to the site has doubled in the last year and continues to grow so the upgrade path is more important than ever. Hopefully now - funds permitting - I can address any performance issues more quickly than I have done previously.

Well done (on fitting the new elastic band......)! I trust any teething troubles will be minimal, but it's all looking good from this end (well my typing is still hampered by a dsyxelic keyboard - no brain transplant yet, either )

As has, ahem, been pointed out to me, Ted, the growth is not, in fact, double but exponential. Apparently, so I am reliably informed(!), for every guy or gal that signs up on PH your traffic will also be increased by assorted ranks of wives, husbands, girlfriends, boyfriends, partners, webmasters at work, mums and others who are checking up on us......
