Ted !! email flames

I have just had an email forwarded from PH (which I have fwdd to you) from fQ (witty huh ?) full of abuse. fQ does not seem to be a member - any ideas ?

Hi JD,

I don't want to sound patronising or anything, but could it be that someone is spoofing a PH address so it looks like it's come from an address at the PH domain but actually hasn't...? Very easy to do. If you think this may be the case, then forward the mail to me and I'll see if I can trace it back somewhere. Once you've hit the FWD button you can remove the content if you wish.

Apologies if I'm getting the wrong end of the stick...!

Hmm, the odd thing is that it is clearly someone who at least reads PH and knows I post. I'll take you up on that I think roop. I don't understand computers really, therefore cannot be patronised in any way in relation to them...

I don't appear to have received the email. Please could you send again. I can also find no trace of the offensive mail or FQ on the system yet. I need some more clues to investigate.

It's for precisely this reason that I insist on email addresses being verified. It won't eliminate the problem but does discourage all but the most determined loonies.

There are also some other mechanisms in place to protect members from idiots like this but I won't go into the details of what they are.

I haven't heard anything else from this idiot (seems to have been related to the Bulger thread) but:

Apparently (according to tame IT bod) PH's email address was spoofed by someone who has knowledge of how PH fwds emails, but Greg (afformentioned bod) could not trace the source of the spoofed mail. I will fwd it again to you Ted and I will fwd it to roop if you want to see if the source is traceable.

That's the first time anyone's bothered doing such a thing. I could build in some mechanisms to validate the integrity of messages but hopefully this won't become a regular occurrence.

Might be missing something here but how did the sender get your e-mail address in the first place? Wouldn't they have to have e-mailed you through your profile and then you replied to it for them to know?
