Ted,
Is there a way to SEE who you have given respect to?
Is it also possible to give someone more than on vote of respect?

I'll try and get back to the respect thing this week. It's not working as smoothly as I'd like currently and is showing some people in a bad light when I don't think they deserve it. If I can't tweak it to a satisfactory scoring system then I'll bin it.

You could weight rating by membership duration or number of posts or something. That way you could perhaps avoid newbies giving offense to the regulars?

How about x number of posts before you can submit respect for anyone else?

how about you get told via email when someone respects or disrespects you.. IMO I'd be quite happy for an email to be sent to anyone I respect or disrespect, telling them I've done so..

A lot of people publish in the forum when they do give someone respect.. and yet the anonimity afforded by the system leads to cowardly, silent 'no respect' ratings. Because of this the whole system has become distorted.

Personally I've not posted regarding any occasion where I've allocated respect positive or negative. But I don't mind anyone knowing when I've rendered a rating as it'd stop this sort of thing.

Carzee, sorry mate, but I disagree. I have given respect to lots of people without telling them, mainly from people I have had dealings with, via email or more directly, or for people who have taken the time to respond on a posting I have made, or given their experience and knowledge onto a subject I am interested in.

How about letting people see how many others you have respected/dissed? More meaningless figures I know, but it might make interesting reading. If someone has only dissed others, then their rating could be of lesser value, or perhaps the reverse is true, if all you ever do is "respect"..?

Just my 2c worth, your mileage may vary, and objects in the rear-view mirror may be closer than they seem.

What was the original objective of the respect system in the first place ?

I don't think its working at the moment - I've turned it off in fact. Why ? Because someone with a hugely positive or negative rating is capable of similar posts, irrestpective of whether you agree with them or not.

I don't like it, Ted. Its leading to false impressions.

Yeah I agree with GregE240 100%. I don't like the system. If there is to be some recognition of status I think it should be a amalgamation of time served on the board and number of posts.

Yes, so have I dear boy - as I said, I've doled out + and - points without saying anything. What I object to is when people have a "respect exchange" thread and hail the positives whilst silently sticking the knife into others..

It's a mutual self promotion alliance - you give someone respect and tell them you did so - hence they give you respect.. it's crap.

Here's an example... www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=26705&f=23&h=0

nah - I just think each time a respect or no respect is dished out, the recipient should be informed in private, via email..

you could have a dialogue box to type in a message explaining why to be included in the email..

quite..

I don't agree that the system should be abandoned altogether, but I do think that the way it currently works is in need of some subtle modification.

Like I say, it's not working. It was an experiment I'll modify or remove it later today.

I think l'm gathering a love-hate following. l look at my profile (purely to follow up recent postings you understand) and several respecters have completely switched their view - jeez talk about fickle.

I have swung from 33% to 90% back to 63% with only one extra vote (you can keep it buddy! ). How did that happen, is this due to the modification? (i'm sure l didn't piss anyone off that much!)

Get rid. If you want a troll alert, how about a rating system that shows an icon/label for a user once the number of votes gets above a certain number.
For e.g. 10 Troll votes (would take NO time for a real troll) and a little troll picture appears in the profile.

This could be adapted for more positive appraisals like 'geezer', 'knows his onions', 'ranter' etc... Multiple icons. Beauty is, you'd need a consensus and nothing would be displayed until that threshold was reached.

Didn't someone take the hump because they were called a gasbag?? I don't think the ratings are that important, as long as the content of the sit is still impressive.

Oh yeah, that's true. A real troll would still get identified. Suppose you could leave it at that.

I like the ratings, its all a bit of fun and I don't care about mine. I believe it is good for members to say their bit.

Keep up the good work Ted.

Perhaps it should be modified to a slightly different purpose...

How about, there is an option so you can give someone a point if they are helpful to you... and take a point off if they are rude / offensive (not a difference of opinion).

Just a thought...

How does the "system" figure out when a "rude / offensive" comment has been made? Surely Ted would have to police it manually which is not really an option?

The eBay ratings system works like this:

Positive: + 1 point
Negative: - 1 point
Neutral: No points

You then get a total score, plus a feedback panel like this:

http://cgi2.ebay.co.uk/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback&userid=minispecial

which shows how many +/- you have had. Perhaps something like this would work?

How does the "system" figure it out?!? - just like the current one... the user clicks on it!

eBay system is a good idea.. like that.

So who have I just upset then, not that being 'popular' has ever been a worry to me, but I'd like to be able to see who gives or takes away 'respect' I would have no problems telling someone if they have offended me or I have respect for them so make it public, maybe in the form of an email

Don't like it - can't see any point to it. If its meant to be a popularity contest, who gives a monkeys? If it's meant to indicate whose opinion is worth reading and whose isn't, I'll make my own mind up, thanks very much. If its a form of quality control, it will damange the site: if anyone has a problem with a post, they should say so, it makes for amusing exchanges, after all we come on here to be entertained as well as to exchange 'useful' information.

Some posts will be irreverent and provocative, this adds to the fun and 'dissing' the originators - annonymously, of course - is not helpful. Remember the guy who came on looking for advice on building a Ferrari from old bits of wood and some silver foil? Very entertaining, but hardly conducive to a high respect grade. Is that what we are looking to weed out? There is already a remedy for offensive and seriously inappropriate posts i.e. the BINNED sticker.

Do we want a bland 'respectful' forum? Maybe some do, but I don't!
