I noticed something strange about these ratings. I thought the way it worked was if you had 10 positives and 8 negatives then your rating was +2. johnelliot's rating jumped from -13 to +13 (I think) because he had 13 negatives and 12 positives until he got a new +ve rating thus changing him to +13. Surely this is a bit confusing because he's gone from someone who appears to have annoyed a lot of people to someone who appears to be adored by many.
*I have no actual opinion of john, just using him as an example*

so, it would be that the system counts the number of 'votes' and then multiplies it by + when the majority were positive; or by - when the majority were negative!?

No wonder then, so many members who were negative rated could not get into positive, unless they got more plus than minus!?
Or am I entirely wrong?

What I think is happening is this:
Assume that someone has 10 positives and 10 negatives. That person would have a respect rating of +10. If I then proceeded to give them a negative rating, their rating would be -11. Seems a bit unfair really! Or maybe its just me...

No, I was wrong:
John has 27 votes, so it shows +14, because 14 were positive and are the majority.
Before you voted, it showed -13, because 13 out of 26 were negative and the majority (not mathematically, as 13 is the exact half).

To pack it in a few words: the algorithm ignores the minority. John should have -13+14=+1 now.

Now I've only been a while but I might as well ask the daft question here: how do know how many votes are positive and how many negative?

Its the default option, and doesnt seem to add or subtract anything from your respect rating. You cant return to it either...
