I know you're keen to improve the usability of the site for us, but I'd just like to point out that I preferred old way the "mates" thing worked where you hover over it and it appears instantly.

I agree. The server was struggling a bit over lunch time and I did that as the first part of a number of tweaks to reduce the load on the database.

Further optimisation and hardware upgrades are being evaluated.

Also the smilies stop annimating and the page has to be refreshed
