Off the back of a discussion on a thread

I was wondering if Pistonheads could introduce a rule where any photos posted on the forum had to have the number plates obscured. (I assume there's no easy way for the forum software to do that automatically like Google maps does)

You could make an exception if the poster was clearly posting their own car, and are not concerned. Or for cars in the classifieds that are linked in forum posts.

Obviously we all hate thefts and criminal activity and given the DVLA will sell anybody's personal data to anyone who enquires. I think it would make a good safety feature. I imagine there's quite a lot of photos on here, that the owners have no idea about. So feels off for them to not be considered as they are not PH members

Or has this been discussed before by the admin team and decided against?

I'm not sure how that rule would be managed. Just look at the number of photos on the bad parking and supercars spotted threads. And the bad number plate thread would die completely.

And, if a vehicle is in a public location, or is visible from a public location, then it's pretty much fair game.

It's a good idea in theory but I'm afraid this isn't something we could practically enforce, nor do we have the software available to do this right now as part of our current upload process. It's something we will consider for the future though.
