You're too hasty with the close button! wink

Looking at these parts of the terms and conditions...

And

My understanding of that is that if the sale doesn't go through for whatever reason, regardless of whether buyer is at fault (owner gets hit by a bus, meteor hits car, it was stolen last week, etc) then there is no refund of the buyers fee?

There is a car I'm interested in and am trying to weigh the risk of losing 5% + VAT of the purchase price.

Hi, the Buyer's Fee is 6%+VAT (capped at £5,000+VAT) and is non-refundable unless there is a valid reason and then we'd step in and mediate in the hope to reach a reasonable, fair outcome for all parties. In all of the (rather extreme!) examples you've listed this would almost certainly be the case.

However if a winning bidder's aim was to win the auction to go and kick tyres with no intention of completing the purchase, or pull out because their other half now isn't allowing them to buy the car, or they were simply bored on auction night, then no that wouldn't be reasonable and the full fee would be retained.

We have to protect interests of both buyer and seller and we want to give both parties a happy, safe, hassle free sale. It's for this very reason we encourage viewings before bids are placed and also have built functionality to allow buyers to ask sellers questions mid-auction.

We also spend a lot of time interviewing the seller, taking over one hundred professional photographs and writing honest detailed descriptions so there really should be no nasty surprises on collection day.

If you want to discuss further one of the consignment team will be more than happy to chat so please drop them an email on auctions@pistonheads.com

Many Thanks
