Only problem is "on topic" subjects tend to go off topic regularly and vice versa !!

Ted, with all the off topic banter that seems to go on in GS, isn't it time we had a dedicated "Off Topic" section?

Just a thought... but in the meantime, keep uo the great job.

And if we had an OffTopic forum, then the stuff in it wouldn't be off-topic would it?

I wouldn't want to see OT stuff hived off into a ne'er visited corner..

Agree with CarZee here....it might lead people to hide it, meaning that people might not devote attention to it.

Since I've been here I've helped a couple of people with stuff nothing to do with cars. And that was browsing General Gassing.

Think it would dilute the content too.

I thought 'General Gassing' covered anything. How can anything *be* off topic there...

As long as people mark it as 'Off Topic' or 'O/T' I haven't got a problem with it.

Aren't most of us browsing the "Last 24 Hrs" page anyhow?

Right - I've thought about this again.

If there are people on here who are genuinely worried about their access to the site being compromised on grounds of forum content, then we should have another forum which they can hide and the rest of us can play in.

I don't want this site to turn into MaxyP or EvoStick, but for crying out loud I don't want it to turn into the bloody thisislondon.co.uk forums which are patrolled by officious geeks slapping down anyone who says anything either rude, in poor taste or about knitting

So what say ye? A "Stay away if nanny wouldn't approve" forum?

Officious geeks!?

We all had enough enjoyment from the forums before the more base topics were discussed. I don't see why we can't just revert to those with the occasional more dubious message. I'm not about to ban off topic (lesbian sperm donation thread on the whole has been very interesting with some great debate), but I will close the occasional thread which I view as not appropriate/tedious/boring.

But its the wide mix of content that keeps me here.. if there was Politics and Horse and Hound rants at PistonMillitants.com you wouldn't find me at Pistonheads.com... ...as it is all in one place it makes the site much better !!

Cheers
Matt.

Not you Ted! The guys on thisislondon.co.uk.

I'm not complaining about the threads you've closed (although the knitting & crochet thread had some more mileage in it IMO ).

I am, however, anticipating that you will be required to respond to a growth in the sort of observations made by Carl as the board gains ever more popularity.

I did offer a compromise & I'm merely concerned about maintaining the unique and yet delicate balance of community from which this board benefits enormously.

Thats the word... Community.. without the diverse chat and comment we'd just end up being another "Car Website"

www.fark.com/ provides links to a variety of humourous/interesting web articles. It flags the dodgier links as 'not suitable for work'.

Maybe we need a similar header option?

Yes but there is a wider issue at stake here.. afterall threads aften wander from CAR to "not for work" and back again... I don't particularly want to be censored to an extent where I cant post a witty anecdote as the thread isn't marked up for one...

I'll dare to venture back ...

There's a big difference between posting the odd slightly irrelevant anecdote and having several whole threads dedicated to pulling yer pud.

They shouldn't be using their company Poxy or ISA server anyway IMHO....makes my downloads a lot slower....selfish so-and-so's

If I access this via our LAN here, I get the odd "Content Unsuitable" message, but I've never had a visit from the Admin boys downstairs wielding big sticks and so forth. I would hope that they've got better things to look out for.

True JohnL.. the point I was making was based upon Neils thoughts on Marking up threads at the start .. in this instance a "Pud Pulling" tag could be slapped on at the start

Be careful here John.... every time you have said what you don't want to hear a thread has started on that very subject I can see a "pulling yer pud" thread now

......and that's what I love about this site, people will pull each other's leg and have a laugh and some threads have had me in tears of laughter. Every now and again you get characters like elemchuckwu and chassis, tossers like Z3 man etc. etc.... we just need to make sure that the "loosest bird" thing is just every now and again rather than every other day. If you murder subjects they cease to be interesting or funny.
