How ruinous is a Gallardo?
Discussion
With 2006 Gallardos starting around 55-60k, my old noggin was doing some jogging.
I don't car about fuel economy, I'd do the servicing / general spannering myself. How high is the protentional for total disaster?
Car would not be a garage queen, would be used 4-5 days per week.
TALK ME OUT OF THIS, PLEASE :-)

Will that be what customers are looking for when you're trying to sell a £50k car in a few years time? You might save ££ on servicing but cost yourself £££££££££££££££ in additional depreciation.
I don’t care about resale value. A car to me is dead money. What I want though is something reliable and maintainable I think £50K is about the level where I wouldn't care about service history, because it wouldn't be likely to be reflected in the cars condition.
That age and that price, I would walk straight past a service history, and get a respected independent assessment of the car. If that were good, the service history wouldn't bother me as a £50K car in good condition isn't going to be worth more than a £50K car in good condition with a perfect service history. Probably general preference or the colour of the car would decide it at that point.

Is the improved reliability of the LP version worth the 10 - 20k price differential over the pre-LP?
Specifically what’s improved about it? Is there a resource you can point me to? More relevant with cars as they started to age.
There were lots of changes in the LP, including exhaust, engine, gearbox and obviously styling. More power and a bit lighter but still beaten by the pre-LP in the sound stakes.
Whether an LP is worth the extra is down to you and your budget - if you can afford either, try both and see what you think. Pre-LPs are now 15-20 years old so finding one that's been loved and properly maintained rather than ragged and neglected is all the more important.

From memory, when I was looking into what to buy next, the earlier Gallardos run a Campi ecu. That means you’ll limited to a couple of software options.
Again double check, but those options were Texa and Lara. They both cost a fair bit. If you’re planning on doing some of your own maintenance, you will need it.
The later LP cars can be diagnosed using VCDS, similar to the R8, which is a very comprehensive tool.

Does the hexnet VCDS allow you to code replacement units?Again double check, but those options were Texa and Lara. They both cost a fair bit. If you’re planning on doing some of your own maintenance, you will need it.
