Quoted £1000 from the dealer to cover up to 8 repairs to alloys or tyres. Is this good value?

I've got the black forged alloys on it.

smile Well that's a debate in itself. I was more trying to understand if this a competitive quote compared to non dealer insurance companies.

It depends on what it includes. I was offered this on a recent new-car purchase and once they explained what was excluded, and the limited number of 'repairs', it just felt like a pointless insurance policy weighted far too much in their favour.

You can get an awful lot of punctures repaired and wheels refurbished for £1,000.

It was offered by HR Owen, I don't have the full details yet not sure if anyone else has taken one through them?

They offer these policies to make money. Ergo, on average you'll be better off without it, especially if you do a modest mileage. Same with GAP insurance and all the other rubbish dealers try to palm off onto you. I never take any of these policies. If I'm unlucky I may have an instance where I'd have been better off with a policy but taken across all cars over the years I'm still much better off not having forked out for them.
Same with extended warranties on electrical goods and things like that - never take any out and you'll be better off in the long run even if things do break occasionally.
The only insurance worth having is that which guards against an outlay that could really hit you financially - car, house, and to some extent extended warranties of cars I suppose. Something where the premium is high compared to the possible claim value is seldom worth it IMO, and alloy wheel insurance falls very much into this latter category.

What's the term? If it's for the life of the vehicle then that doesn't sound bad to me.

It's for the life of my ownership, which in reality will be at least 3 or so years.

In my experience all such policies are better sought aftermarket rather than via Dealer, if you wish to have them. Just make sure you check the maximum value per claim limit for things like wheels and tyres, so that they do actually cover the cost.

Used ALA in the past. Very good and hassle free when you need to claim.

I had a quote of £500 to restore my 4 diamond cut R8 alloys to perfect condition which equates to around £250 per year of my ownership.

Yours are probably on a different, more expensive level and it will depend on the policy T&Cs.

However with the info provided, I'd save the money, put it in a pot and use it as required.
