Hi,

Picked up my 'new' car yesterday, love it - 2013 Gallardo lp560-4.

Got a question though, when slowly reversing into my drive after driving home I noticed a real heavy knocking noise from what appeared to be the front wheels approaching full-lock. When driving the car out later, I noticed the same. It's so pronounced it's almost as if you're driving over something. Like the wheel is knocking the bodywork or something. I don't notice any problems at any other time and visually can't seem to see anything.

Any ideas? I didn't notice it when I picked it up but maybe that's because I didn't have to turn the wheel that much.

It's likely the AWD system / diff. It may "crab" sometimes , also. Fairly common and usually nothing to worry about.

Thanks Yipper, I did see a couple of similar posts elsewhere but I couldn't quite understand them.

Have a read on this thread if you haven't already. Describes similar symptoms to what you are experiencing with a wide range of cars.

Tyres, not mechanicals, responsible. You should then be able do further research using the info mentioned in many of the posts.

Hopefully it's this as oppose to anything more serious.

Whilst you do sometimes hear the odd grumble from the diff, I’ve never experienced what you describe in over 55k miles of Gallardo ownership. If it persists, have it looked at.......

What tyres are on it? Some profiles from some tyres can be a millimetre or two thicker than others and will rub slightly against the front wheel-well on full lock. Also worth looking at. Easily fixed with a change of tyre-brands.

my tyres always wound-up and juddered on the drive
replacing the brick drive with gravel solved it !

Thanks Andrew - what actually caused it though for you?

i believed it was just down to one side of any one tyre travelling a longer arc to the other side

Cool, cheers. My problem is my wife won't drive it so it's difficult for me to replicate the sound and investigate smile Will figure something out, appreciate the responses.

On my old LP560 I had a noise from the front on full lock at parking speeds and it felt like the tires were skipping/understeering. I only ever had it when the car was cold though. When warmed up it was completely normal. I was told by a mechanic who seemed to know what he was talking about, that it was the diff and perfectly normal and that changing to a different spec of oil would help. I never did this though because it was always fine at normal operating temperatures.

Got same problem on 12c, and previous Gallardo, and 360, and 355
Tyre radius makes some sense.

My pre-LP does it on full or near-full lock at start up on block paved drive when the tyres are cold. Doesn't do it on grass or gravel, or when tyres are warm. Nothing to worry about.

Never you mind

My RWD Gallardo does this as well when it's on full lock and slow speeds. I just presume it's the tyres as I have no front diff smile

It's nothing to worry about and a common symptom of the AWD system.

My 2012 LP570-4 does it too when cold and on paved surface.

Would be interesting to hear if the RWD Gallardo also does it?
