About to buy? Maybe?.... MK1 SL (re: RHD vs LHD)
Discussion
We have a 996 Turbo. Was planning to shift it and get into 997 GT3RS. Looked at a few but both were SoR with dealers not wanting to convey to owners the reality of what the car is worth. So we asked, "if not a GT3RS, what would be the other car we would want?"....A MK1 Superleggera of course.
Not seeing what we wanted online we popped into dealer just to see if they know of anything coming in or to get on some sort of "list" if/when something comes up. We assume it must be fate...exactly what we are after is available and not yet advertised.
Before we put down the deposit and move things along I am hoping to get some insights from the kids on team Lambo?
I know its a great car. I know it is possibly worth what is being asked but am not certain because I don't know enough about the market. Available is RHD with >25k/<30k miles in a good colour, good history, (main dealer) offered at approx. £120k.
Less than the GT3 and within budget. Not necessarily "bothered" about cost but I want to be sure of "value for money".
I've seen 3 x other MK1 SL online. One is around 100k RHD but isn't a great car so not factored into discussion. The other 2 x include £105k with 8,000 miles & £80k with 17,000 miles.(I called about the latter, just in from france, history not available yet but there is something "off" about the rear bumper).
2 x cars aren't a great sample size but I think it reasonable to say one might expect to be able to but LHD with <20,000 miles for around £90-100k
From a bit more research, people who have LDH cars don't seem to mind them. I don't envisage spending a lot of time in parking garages or going through McDonalds drive through so in theory it isn't really problem. But, RHD is better for resale and preference for LHD is normally reflected in the price whether it be a SL, GT3, etc...
What I am wondering if the RHD vs LHD price differential is really £20-30k for the SL?
From what I have seen, Gallardo (non-SL) in 2007-2009 range will be about 80-95k RHD with occasional outliers higher/lower. In and amongst are some LDH and when I compare like for like (in as much as possible) RHD vs LDH I am seeing £5-10,000 differential in terms of cost.
Maybe I am just being a bit overly cautious....we are not investors and we are buying to drive. But, I don't want to pay over the odds and I haven't watched the MK1 SL market long enough to know what one should expect them to go for and the differential that may be reasonable on LHD vs RHD.
The short version of the novel above is something along the lines of:
In general, is a relatively like for like (mileage, colour etc...), LHD MK1 SL worth £30,000 more than a RHD SL?
I look forward to any insights, thanks!
Rachel

Hi Rachel
Checkout the gallardo specials register, there are maybe 14 rhd left in the UK.
In 2011, they were 100 to 110k
They haven't seen appreciation like the scud, but values definately firm
Personally, I'd bid 100 on the principle car... Yellow very rare in UK and at 8k miles should be like new...

The position of the steering wheel is only part of the difference in price. Have you enquired to any of the dealers selling LHD cars? In my experience, cars coming across from the continent do not have anywhere close to the history and condition of a UK delivered car.
So I think until you've been to view some cars/had inspections done and got the full history, it's difficult to say if there is there really is that amount of £s difference between LHD and RHD cars. Always buy on condition and history.

Thanks, I have looked through the register and probably every thread on this sub-forum with the term "superleggera" or "SL". I think the issue I am having is that RHD is comparatively rare so it isn't as easy to draw conclusions about the market and comparisons with LHD as it would be looking at GT3 RS etc... That the yellow one at Prindeville is tempting, especially with 8k mileage, and there are other good (LHD) cars at even lower cost also with sub-20 mileage. If we were 100% sold on going LHD and it made no difference we could spend a lot less than we budgeted and get a great car. The thing is, we are a bit torn. My objective is to try to find good balance. From what I see here ya'll know a lot more than I do about the SL market so I am hoping someone will pop up to tell me that a £30-40k higher price tag for RHD vs LHD (relatively like-for-like car) is either bonkers or completely reasonable.

Saw it at Redline but not what we are after. Fairly certainly and specifically looking at MK1 only. If not we may have to turn away from the dark side and head back into Porsche. Rachel
Hi Rachel, first of all you wouldn't be disappointed moving to the dark side. I did exactly the same getting an SL gen 1 back in 2015, a UK RHD having owned and enjoyed a number of Porsches.
I would say that if you are not bothered about it being LHD and not so interested by pure investment then why not? I'd agree with earlier comments about buying on condition and maintenance history.
The upsides of RHD will be rarity and you'll see a more healthy return as a bonus should you ever want to sell but then again it's a car that gets under your skin like you find when driving something like a GT3RS.
The price for a good SL gen 1 seems to be in the region of 120-130k for very good RHD variants.
Good luck with the search!
Simon

Good luck in finding a SL. If I was spending £120k I would buy this http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/m...

He wants to replace his car I would guess, because he spoiled it by putting an ironing board on the back.
Back on topic, I have a LHD manual SL gen 1. No worries at all with LHD in UK in my experience.
