308 gt4 Dino - seems cheap?
Discussion
After selling my 1976 911 last summer I have a hankering for a Dino, I love the looks and watched a few YouTube videos. Is 40k a reasonable budget for something usable but not mint?

Are they an easy sell? In 2025 I have the option to pay off the mortgage but would mean selling it.

They are lovely cars and that colour suits it. However that car might be a bit of a gamble as it looks a little unloved. I would recommend a specialist inspection before diving in. I would spend a bit more to get a sorted one like this one which will probably cost you less in the long term

I had one for about 10years and it didn’t cost me much to run at all as it was a well looked after example

I can see that the blue one might well need a lot of work, but it looks to have that wonderful patina that cars which haven't been 'restored' sometimes get.
Shiny red one no doubt much more sensible buy but it just looks like another too-shiny Ferrari in comparison.
Of course it's easy for me to say that as I don't have to pay the garage bills...

My first Ferrari was one of the cheapest available at the time and looked decent.
At that time it was only 8yrs old.
By the time I had 'sorted' it i would of been financially prudent buying a 'better' one in the first instance.
Have a look at the maintenance the red one has had undertaken; I would allow for a decent % of that being required in the not to distant future of the blue one and thats more than a chunk of your extra £15k extra.
You have mentioned that you will be looking to offload in 2 years and ease of selling.
As much as others may disagree, one is resell red, and the other isn't.
My first Ferrari was Le Mans Blu, the next was Rosso Corsa, so speaking from personal experience for both colour and cheaper offerings.
thanks for your replies, they certainly make sense. I took a punt and bought a cheap 911 from the states and it hit me with a really expensive engine rebuild bill! fortunately prices are strong so managed to get out without losing money.
£40k would be my top budget so it sounds like I am probably out of the market if the blue one has a 10k+ shopping list
I don't mind getting my hands dirty but know my limitations and prefer patina cars to shiny stuff.

These cars don't 'fly off the shelf' normally, and the market is notably quiter currently.£40k would be my top budget so it sounds like I am probably out of the market if the blue one has a 10k+ shopping list

There may well be a negotiation to meet halfway between your top budget and the asking price.
If you have one eye on selling in 2 years, spending a bit more will see you in a better position at sale time.
Also, bear in mind even with the red car, you shall almost certainly get the opportunity to get your hands dirty!

Was very tempted as i owned it some 43 years ago, It was my first Ferrari and bought it in Birmingham
so a bit of a coincidence it's ended back there,Often wondered what ever happened to it as i've never seen it advertised in all this time.
Paid £4,500 after a brief haggle but never made it home after the water pump seized in Oxford having to tow the rest of the way behind
my wifes TR7 the following day.

In this GT4’s favour is that it’s an early Dino badged example and it’s RHD, if the OP has a look at it let’s hope it turns out to be a good one.
I have one an Italian import 1977 mk2 LHD ( use it in the EU ) .S Italy no salt on roads .
That one in the add , It looks a little unkept, needs TLC throwing @ it .That’s part of the appeal from a enthusiastic DIY er .
A few co piglia bands missing , the whole Aircon pump has been removed ( was an option = maybe not specced ? ) the header tanks an it’s last legs ( rust from the inside out ) .The AOS has a pipe pulled in the pic for some reason = probably clogged or they squirt starting fluid in .The early mk1 s don’t have inertia seat belts .It’s got the wrong mirrors too .Those “ California “ are from a mk2 .It should have chrome mirrors .That rear Ferrari badge below the number plates wrong too .
Today as values climb it’s all about originality. That might be reflected in its asking price?
Boot carpet needs a clean and re gluing up .Use shoe glue .The original fades with time .
Should have the Chromadora wheels .Chances are those Penta wheels are after market ? Wider just makes steering / manoeuvres at slow parking a PITA .OEM pentas came around 78 and will have Ferrari cast into the rim grove .
It will need a fluid change and probably some coolant pipe refresh underneath.
Good news is the oil filter is correct , the UFI , the air box screws are original and the plug leads look new ish .
The rest of it pretty basic engineering, they are easy DIY cars , plenty of on line resources, suggest “Ferrari chat “ ,plenty of parts availability = “ super performance “ are good .
They are great to drive btw very involving .Chassis allegedly developed by N Lauda .
I had a Testarossa my first F car followed by a 360M F1 and now one of these
I seem to have gone round the houses to find the best drivers car ??. Easier maintenance F car .
Bertone thing too and Marcelo Gandini s connection all add to the rarity .One wonders what will happen to the values when Gandini passes away = knocking on the door of 90 now ?
the +2 thing works practically too .
^ Don’t let nay say do ers talk you into thinking it’s not a proper Ferrari .
It was conceived as race car in GT classes made for the road .
Even chassis numbers where reserved for race cars that Enzo produced .Road cars had odd numbers. The Dino GT4 s where entered in La Mans at launch . = another story !
Can’t comment on future offloading , I bought mine to drive it’s a keeper .
^ Dash to die for ? “ Dino “ on the speedo + tachometer . Correct momo wheel finger delicate rim + control stalks .

Thanks for your findings into the blue car, certainly worth bearing in mind. I haven't heard back from the seller so probably a dead advert that they have forgotten to delete when it sold. I love the way the design is so similar to the stratos.
Sometimes overlooked is the fact that Gandini based his design of the GT4 on his own for the first Urraco prototype which was rejected by Ferruccio Lamborghini in 1970. With some stylistic tweaking here and there, he came up with the 246's replacement just over two years later.Apologies for hijacking the thread somewhat, but I adore these cars - good luck with your search / eventual choice
Some sensible advice in the good replies so far...
I've had mine for over 21 years now (early S1 twin distributor model as per the blue advert). I took the buy (very) cheap and then spend a lot of money over a long time approach But I have ended up with exactly what I wanted as a keeper, so maybe not applicable to the OP.
Once well setup and running as intended, they are an absolute peach to drive and those in the know who have driven plenty of exotica always rate them as a great driving/race car. They can be worked on easily by a competent home mechanic, otherwise there are plenty of good independent specialists. Prices have certainly climbed a bit in recent years, but it's still a great option if bought with eyes wide open...

Can't get enough of the GT4 Ferrari Dino:
The silver 208GT4 is for sale at EUR 58k
This early (002) 3.2 Carrera has to be the very best 911 G I ever drove: phew!
Four in a row and organising Dino Day #2 as we speak.
Had several 308 GT4's in various colours ,even a brown one,The silver car in the photo is by far the best colour for a GT4The silver 208GT4 is for sale at EUR 58k

in my opinion, the third car in the photo in azzurro blue is just as nice, blue chiaro also suits them ,
like the 365 GT4's / 400's and 412's light metallic colours suit them better, seems to bring out the lines better than red ,
Just saying
