My wife and I are planning to travel to Italy next year and visit the Ferrari Factory and Museum. We want to take the 355 obviously. Now We have three options:

1/ Drive there in it - 1000 miles each way plus any pottering whilst we are there.
2/ Stick it on the train from Holland to Livarno saving 700 miles each way but gives us the car whilst we are there and we can potter about in it too...
3/ Tow it behind our Motorhome - I'd have to get a trailer and I realise that I'll end up driving it very little

I have a good idea how I'd prefer to do it - anyone done the ultimate road trip in their Ferrari? If so have you any tips and pointers smile

I'm sorry but you have left me shaking my head in disbelief, it's a car and a very nice one, surely drive there and enjoy the journey, or you could get someone else to drive it there and back for you....

Has to be option 1.
This year I took my 550 down there. My trip was 3 days to Monaco for the historic races, then across to Maranello for 3 days for the museums and factories. Up to Brescia for the start of the Mille Miglia. Then Germany to Schloss Neuschwanstein, BMW, Porsche and Mercedes museums. Finally the Sinsheim and Speyer museums and then home. 2800 miles in a fortnight. Just what our cars are built for. I checked out the hotels before booking to check that there was suitable parking and that was it.

The train would be a second choice depending on your co-driver but towing with a motorhome, no way!!

Pah! You come back and then flog the car! I have certainly considered doing at least one way with the car on the train. Why not cut out a chunk of the journey if that isn't the bit you want to drive? Plus you can be progressing towards your destination whilst you're asleep. I certainly wouldn't consider towing behind a motorhome though.

smile

Like I said - I knew how I would like to do it...

Driving there is the easiest smile The train did take some of the 'less interesting' miles out of it. We actually love staying in our motorhome - I prefer it to any hotel - so its not such a daft idea.

We did the Porsche/Mercedes/Hymer/Schlumph museum last year (in the motorhome) so this trip kind of finishes it all off smile

When I drove to Maranello, my wife didn't like the idea of so much seat time. We got the overnight train one way from Düsseldorf to Trieste in northern Italy. It worked very well.

It's expensive, mind. If my wife was ok with the drive, I'd have driven there and back all the way.

I guess if you're going direct to Maranello and back then train could be the way to go especially if your passenger isn't keen on driving. However if you're visiting places en route - Le Mans, Schlumpf, Route Napoleon, German museums, etc then has to be 355 all the way. Just thought if your journey is UK-Maranello-UK probably easier/cheaper to fly and get a rental.

Did this trip a couple of years ago in my old mans 246. It has to be option 1, take a couple of days to do the journey. The route there was via Spa, Germany and onto Marranello via the Stelvio (2 nights).

A summary of our trip:

We stayed in the Maranello Palace for two nights, then onto Milan for another couple of nights, although we should have spent a bit longer around Maranello as there are lots of things to see and do, with the Masser and Lambo factories near by, Fiorano test circuit and the Enzo Museum... you could even chase the test drivers round the surrounding windy roads when they road test the cars!
Restaurants - must visit the Ristorante Cavallino and the Ristorante Montana. Ask to visit Enzo's dining room in the Cavallino and spend a good amount of time after you meal in the Montana looking round the Ferrari memorabilia.
On the way back, we came straight through France, stopping Just south of Reims.
The 355 is a much more comfortable car than the 246 obviously, and the modern brakes wont let go half way down the Stelvio hehe
If you are planning a factory tour too (this can be arranged by your local Ferrari dealer), you will be let into the visitors car park in front of the factory for a unique photo opportunity under the archway. There are some photos on Nick Cartwright's website of our trip with the Dino under the famous factory entrance. (Sorry, I cant hyperlink it)

The 355 is a far better mode of transport than either of the other two options. It was built to be driven...

Have a great trip, whatever you decide.
