599 rear quarter lights crazing
Discussion
The perspex rear quarter lights on my Ferrari 599 GTB have started to "craze", one worse than the other. I have been quoted an outrageous sum of money to have them replaced (in excess of £2,000 for two little bits of perspex). Has anyone else experienced this problem, does anyone know what causes it and does anyone know of a 599 being broken for spares from which I might purchase the quarter lights? Thanks.
there is one mentioned on here which is being sold for parts may be worth keeping an eye out, or try http://www.eurospares.co.uk/ ?
mat430 - thanks. Had a look at eurospares and the windows are £523 each (not sure whether includes VAT) so dealer suggesting £2k plus maybe a little on the high side.
Montpellier - thanks for the info. "Splitting" is a better description of what is happening rather than "crazing" which I used. I shall have a pop at Ferrari N.E. to see whether they will shoulder some of the cost if it is a known fault.

Mine were done under warranty, but is a known issue. Bit like 430 manifolds... Or Porsche 966 RMS . Personally, when faults are this prevalent, if a car is serviced, the manufacturer should do the decent thing. It is not a wear and tear item, it is a design fault. Montpellier - thanks for the info. The cause of the cracking or crazing in acrylic quarter lights is almost certainly caused by one of the following:
The material is highly stressed when in position which could result from them being machined to the wrong size or incorrect fitting.
The material has not been correctly heat treated to remove stress inherent in the raw material or caused as a result of the machining operation .
The material has been exposed to a solvent that will cause solvent induced stress cracking or crazing.
Any of the above will result in the material exhibiting the type of failure observed and it could take time for this to occur as the stress is slowly relieved.
If any of you have a window that could be used as a template, try contacting sales@carville.co.uk . Carville has excellent facilities for producing such parts in a stress-free condition that should last indefinitely.
