Hi all,

im looking at changing my current G class out and getting into a GTC4Lusso.

The car in question has above average miles (for a Ferrari, just under 40k) which doesnt bother me in the slightest as i'll be driving and enjoying it as much as i can anyway.

I've spoke to Gray Paul who were happy to take it in for a PPI before i commit to the car (they also serviced it last) and i've also spoke to Simon at SS Autotech and his colleague who were incredibly knowledgeable and helpful mainly RE PTU issues and repairs.

i guess im just looking for up to date, real world owner opinions and views on these as there are plenty on here and F Chat but many threads are dated.

I've been told the discs are in excellent condition, front pads are almost new with the rears on 80% so that also gives some good piece of mind.

i welcome any pointers to look out for!

I had one for about a year and a half, and from memory did about 8k miles in it. The engine is the star, but needs to be revved to get the best out of it, not always easy on our poorly maintained and congested roads. It is a large car, I found some of the narrow roads around where I live almost impossible to navigate in it. It performs best on the open road with plenty of space! I had no real problems, although I bought my example at two years old with just 3k miles on it, so virtually new. Expense wise, extended warranty isn’t cheap and I broke the rear diffuser hitting a pothole, £10k to replace! It will be a very different experience from your G-Wagen.

check that the screws/bolts on the brake discs are not rusty if the car was in a salty environment at some point. My brakes were still at c. 50%, but some of the bolts had fallen out, so needed to replace all four discs. Very different to drive to a G-class. I love my FF and have driven a Lusso a bit on a Ferrari event (personally prefer the slightly rawer FF). Still will need to sell it soon unfortunately (or my G, or possibly both), but really do love both cars. FF has been reliable apart from one gearbox leak, no other issues at all with the car in >100k km. I ignore the various warning lights, I have had everything - usually due to (i) battery running low or (ii) one of my parking sensors never having worked properly, even after I had it replaced - so just gave up on that one. Performs really well in snow, takes a mountain bike with the seats folded down, has 4 proper seats plus luggage space - it is really one of the best cars I have ever owned.

one thing to keep in mind is that it does not do well with parking ramps that drop sharply as it will bottom out in the middle due to the long wheelbase in combination with the relatively low ride height (at least without lift, which I don't have).

I bought one in the summer. I had had a F12 and in reality missed the very special engine and needed something more usable with 2 kids now. I started with the FF but I couldn t find a decent one and after a bad experience when trying to buy one from a notable used car dealer located in Horsham.

I test drove the Roma but had no usable rear seats and the engine is powerful but not as special as a V12. Ferrari basically told me if you can stretch to the Lusso as it s on another level quality wise.

Now. Using it on the continent on beautiful road it s a wonderful car. V12 has space to breathe and size is never an issue. Here in the U.K. though roads can be a touch challenging to open up the power, 4 wheel drive does help though. But you are always aware that the rear dominates. Especially on cold damp roads. Trust me.

I didn t find it too intimidating to use despite the size. I think the RWS plays a part in this. The F12 felt a lot more boat like given the front felt a mile away from the seat. Not so here.

The engine is magnificent when opened up. I think I miss the ability to keep the valves open though so might look at a forza componenti controller. I am not sure mid and back box upgrades at 8k+ are worth it, when valves open it does sound very good.

Mine has all the extras of the catalogue. Only thing missing is ADAS which came on the very last car (I would want the blind spot monitor really).

Lift I find useful for peace of mind. I have used it on uneven terrain (yes it has happened) and indeed ramps.

Lots space inside for the kind of car. Quality is good. Sound system could be better (I have the jbl one). Fuel economy atrocious but I don t care.

I bought Ferrari approved warranty. Might need as it has a rattle that was there since I drove off the dealer courtyard and it s driving me mad.

I left it in driven for 2 months on trickle charger and upon restart it needed a full 50miles drive to clear all the faults on the dash. It litterally had everything lit up. That would not happen with a German product. But hey

I sometimes miss the shape and drama of the smaller Ferrari like the 458/488/F8/296 etc or the shape of the F12/812. But I know I would use those even less than I do the Lusso in London.

Sometimes I think I should replace the X5 and the Lusso with a URUS, Cayenne GT or Aston DBX. But then they have none of the magic. Purosangue is a bit of a weird proposition and obscenely expensive.

Nothing has changed much since a lot of those posts were created other than the fact that SS Autotech can now upgrade the PTU at reasonable cost so it's no longer the financial UXB it once was. But you've clearly done your homework on it and I think that the reason there aren't many recent owner experiences is that everything which needs to be said has been said. I also think that owners are hanging on to their cars as the number available for sale seems to decline every year so there are fewer 'new owner impressions' threads. We're on to our ninth year with the FF.

all, thanks for your valid input - its been very helpful.

PTU and potential DCT issues are on my mind so im looking at third party warranties. Im not that bothered with a Ferrari Power Warranty - as in the case of a PTU failture, they are going to put a like for like item back in again prolonging the issue later down the line for me or someone after me. Instead im considering a third party warranty where i can opt to take the car to a garage of my choice (SS Autotech would be my choice), where in the case of a PTU failure, they can repair but also future proof the issue which i feel is a solid selling point for later down the line.

Warranty wise were a reasonable cost for a platinum cover for a year - total claims to the value of the car, and any one claim limited to £10k, and a claim can be made from day one should it need to be. I've never had a third party warranty before so im cautious but i've seen some general good feedback online (along with the not so good).

in anycase - i've left a deposit on the car and all going well i collect it next week. First Ferrari - can't wait.

I would definitely do extensive research on 3rd party warranties especially the one you mention, I'm not even sure it's an insurance backed product so if they refuse to pay out then you have zero recourse ie no ombudsman etc

I'd be careful of warranty wise. I got a quote, then emailed them and specifically asked if the PTU was covered. 48 hours later they came back and said that was not covered as it was a known issue so basically a waste of money. The V12 from that era car is basically bomb proof and very well proven, the only achilles heal they have is the PTU which can be rebuilt and future proofed now for around £8k so a little more than a years Ferrari Warranty. Based on that i decided to self insure and keep fingers crossed.
If the battery is low it will give loads of errors, Ferrari want £1000 for a new battery fitted where as you can buy the same spec from Varta for £200 and fit it yourself.
4k miles in so far and its epic (although i have an FF which is a little more raw than the Lusso)

Did the car check out in the end?

I’ve been looking at FF’s do a while but now also looking at GTC’s.
