Hi,

I am in the first throws of considering buying a 599. It will be my first supercar and I've seen a couple that I like. I've yet to drive one but plan to do so on my return to the UK.

There's a black one with tan interior on DL but this one in Germany really took my eye and I've made an enquiry.

https://preowned.ferrari.com/en/search/2010/ferrar...

I'd very much appreciate your knowledge and experience of using a LHD 599 everyday and also if you've imported one.

Thanks

I wouldn’t even considered it Cake.
The 599 is a fairly big old bus and lhd in the U.K. would really make her feel her size. I’ve run lhd in the U.K. and rhd abroad and only really consider doing so on smaller, but more agile cars. For everyday use I certainly wouldn’t consider harness, they are just bloody annoying after 10mins of normalcy. Harness are for track tarts only.

Thanks.

I just really like the colours of the car with the GTO wheels.
Have to agree about the Harness, it is a pain unless on track.

I ran a lhd 599 while living in London. I certainly wouldn’t daily it but didn’t have any issues apart from having to be more cautious overtaking on country roads since your visibility is marginally obscured. It’s a very easy car to place and smaller than a whole host of other supercars.

That harness will be a pita

A few years ago I bought a BMW Z8 with the intention of using it as a daily... it wasn't long before the Manual and LHD was just not enjoyable for daily use so it had to go.... wish i had of kept now though.... worth four times as much now.....hehe

I had a Caterham R400D that I used a daily for two years. Always took plenty of planning, different weather gear, tyres etc. But the biggest pain was always getting belted up.

I watched JayEm's video in a LHD 599 and he never seemed to worry too much.

I do want something I can just enjoy

This me, always loose money but I'm thinking the 599 is pretty likely to hold value.

I used my LHD single mirror Testarossa for a daily when I owned, no problem. Just a heads up, I am sure you know there will be VAT implications for bringing in a car from the EU now..

Using something like this as your only car is a compelling idea, but flawed for several reasons IMO.

Firstly, it took me about 2 weeks of regular use before I stopped thinking of it as a special event, just my way of getting around. There's a saying that 'the death of beauty is familiarity' which certainly applied in my case. What remains then is all the stuff you find painful such as LHD, harnesses etc. Secondly, you have to be able to park it up and forget about it wherever you go; my litmus test is a railway station car park. I was considering a GTC4 lusso as my daily but it fails this test for me, it's always going to be a niggle and pretty sure it would get ruined. Lastly, will you be using it in a built up area? I've stopped driving in London altogether because the roads are terrible, bus drivers are psychopaths and I need eyes in the back of my head ie it's a pretty joyless experience.

There's a reason most people use these on an occasional basis and have a beater at other times.

Great insight. I have a couple options for other cars. I still have my Caterham for trackdays and a GT86 for being sensible.
I hate leaving the Caterham out overnight as there's always the evidence of people who've taken an interest in the car, even with a cover. I have a proper love hate relationship with this car.
I'm in the Peak District now and summer is a tourist nightmare but otherwise It's nothing like London though I'm sure the trucks and tractors are just as bad as your bus drivers.
I'm hoping that familiarity will only deepen the affection while becoming more comfortable.

So what did you choose instead of the GTC4 lusso?

Spot on, and London Bus driving standards have declined significantly in recent years. Drivers are causing accidents and injuries.

The Mayor needs to launch an inquiry and sort.

I've got a lefties f430 in London and have had it many years. I only use it in town if I was staying central and know where my end to end car parking situation was. Ie. Underground car parks wouldn't go near unless I knew them and not just ticket barriers but steepness and tightness of exit ramps.
Sadly there are plenty of areas in London where dirivng a ferrari draws potentially dangerous situations. Put it this way I've been approached or nearly approached by trouble makers. Parking in town is always difficult and simply put I was no longer prepared to park it without it either being in a very quiet street or indeed in front of the cafe or restaurant. Perhaps some London owners don't Care about damage hassle or costs but I do!

Not exactly in the same league, but my go to cars for daily duties are a 911SC and when I get it back again, a 930 flatnose. Easy to park, go over speedbumps without any drama and lots of fun to smoke around in. I would dearly love a V12 lusso, but it'd end up in the garage I just know it.

911 is really the perfect every day car. I had a 981 GTS boxster and it really was awesome. But that V8 in a Maserati MC stradale just got me lusting for the noise with some real performance.

So the lust has gone to 599. I've always thought they were nicely subtle. I planning on using it but don't want to be afraid of it every time I leave it.

I care about the damage and hassle too. London has always been too busy for me but with lockdown was a surprise. Never thought about how tight and steep the exit ramp. Something to bear in mind.

Caterham always draws attention but of the friendly kind. My friend in his 488, a different story so I understand about the trouble makers or other drivers who just want to give you a bad drive.

So I sent an enquiry. Previous front and rear crash damage repaired buy the same dealer. Wrapped.

It's definitely a no-no.

Thanks for all the insight. I won't rule out a LHD but definitely this one. Search is on.

I have no problem using LHD cars, other than annoying at car park barriers etc but some say different, so I'm sure it's personal choice.

Remember that there are silly amount of taxes to be added to imports post-brexit, which probably means you'd get a much better deal on an LHD currently in the UK.
