£200+VAT Labour Rate?
Discussion
Good evening,
I am having some work done on my 17 488 at my local Ferrari dealership.
I found a piece of paperwork last year that stated that their hourly rate was a lot less than currently quoted.
I am currently being charged / quoted £200+VAT per hour? I won’t name the dealership, but it seems extortionate to me.
Is this the norm? Or shall I be getting quotes off other dealers? I need quite a big job doing to the car so the labour rate is important.

I find main dealers like this so bad value for money that it puts me off owning new cars.
£200+vat may be needed for their overheads but that’s due to their massive hamster wheel of flashy showrooms etc. most of the time they are unbolting one thing and putting on a new one, it isn’t rocket surgery.

It may be worth negotiating if its a lot of hours or looking for an indie I don’t have knowledge of a dealer’s overheads when it comes to workshops but I’m guessing that it includes cost of space, energy, maintenance, equipment and time when there aren’t cars in for service etc.
If that’s 60% of the hourly rate, for example, that still leaves £80/hr or a daily rate of £640. Are mechanics seeing anywhere near that? Maybe the overheads are much higher? Seems crazy

My Ferrari indie is £75 + vat which is very nice when you want a big job done.
Pretty sure my Porsche indie is the same.
My 458 needs a service and it was a 1 owner car with full Ferrari history so I am minded to keep it up. It I don’t like the main dealer round brand round here and I like my indie. I may just keep her, in which case it indie from here on in.

OMG that sounds like a lot even for a main dealer,
I paid £900 for my first service at Maranello's on my F430 ,had only covered under a thousand miles since the previous one
but it was on time rather than mileage,
One year later and eighteen hundred miles i paid £1800 ,when i asked why was double they said
they had to change two more fluids than the time before
Because the car was under a two year Ferrari warranty i had to take it to a main dealer for it's yearly scheduled service
otherwise it would make it none -void.
While at Maranello's for the first service they noticed that one of the rear ball-joints cover was split and would i like them to
fit a new one ,not being covered by the warranty i asked how much this might cost,£650 was the reply which sounds expensive
just for a rubber gaiter ,I told them to leave it and i will sort it out myself as long as getting a specialist to do the work won't effect
the rest of my warranty, Called Mick and Phil at QV who have been looking after my GTB and previous Ferrari's going back to the
90's ,they quoted me £165 to supply and fit said gaiter ,they said leave it with us for a couple of hours and have some lunch by the Thames
and it will be ready , two hours later we collected it with a invoice for £125 including the part, labour and vat against Maranello's £650.
I asked how much they would charge for the same service that i had done they quoted between £650 to £750 compared to £1800 that i had just paid
So with the car soon to be out of warranty you can guess who i would go to for the next service.
I was aloud to look under the car and talk to the guy who did the job, had a cuppa in the tea room with the boys which i much prefer to
the palatial premises that most of the prestige car dealers have these days.
Both Mick and Phil are Maraneollo trained and and did their apprenticeship there.
You should give them a try if not to far for you.
If not try Emblem in Bournemouth they are very good .

What's the indie you use? Just mulling over whether to keep up the 458 main dealer service or go there. I really don’t want to give the main dealer any money.

May not be of use to you unless your’re in North Yorkshire. But it’s Enso Automotive. Been going four years now and am happy.

If a keeper i'd go with your regular people not just to save money but chances are because of the personal relationship you have alreadyJust mulling over whether to keep up the 458 main dealer service or go there. I really don’t want to give the main dealer any money.
with them and you are know to them not just a number at the reception desk,
I felt guilty taking the 430 to Maranello's instead of QV but i had to because of the terms of the warranty ,
I did think on the same lines as you ,should i keep the main dealer servicing going to secure the value but the car was 15 years old
and most earlier cars these days have a mix of main dealer and specialist history and came to the conclusion that i was paying the extra
cost just for the stamp which you will get anyway from the specialist, besides like i said it's more of a personal thing and usually you can talk to the
man who is working on your car and business is mostly done on first name basis and most are enthusiasts who enjoy what they are doing

Even Dacia are at it. They quote around £150 diagnostic fee to tell you the heater fan resistor has failed, which is blatantly obvious to anyone without any diagnosis beyond turning the heater dial.
They then charge a similar amount to supply and fit. That's a £10 part and 5 mins work. Some people have had them fail 5 or 6 times within the warranty period.
Makes some of the prestige brands seem decent value.
