Thinking of giving a 488 spider a go, while that might not seem a big deal, I sold an F8 spider a few months ago and I’m hoping I won’t be disappointed as I was with the F8.
My problem was very simple and that was noise or rather lack of it. While the F8 was brutally quick it just sounded crap. I really do fancy an F8 tributo but won’t risk it for the same reason unless someone knows how I can change the exhaust without buggering the warranty.
So that only gives me one other modern v8 option the 488! Do they sound better than the F8 and is the spider prone to scuttle shake?

Cheers

Steve

Didn’t you try the F8 spider before you bought it? The 458 sounds a lot better than the 458 (IMHO) but for V8 noise I struggle to think of something better than the 355.

I did try the f8 and at the time it seemed ok but after a while it felt muted just not how a proper Ferrari should.

Willy is on the money. The best V8 fezza sound was from the F355. You can come close to it with a Kline equipped F430.

If you want something more modern with a great sound then you need to look at the V12s. F12, 812, FF or Lusso.

I have an 812 at the moment and have owned 360/360 cs and 430 and 430 scud and a few more. Not really asking which is the best sounding just how the 488 sound as a Ferrari with a turbo on it!

There is no such thing as a good sounding turbocharged engine. It’s down to the physics of modifying the exhaust gas stream by placing a turbo in the way. If you didn’t like the F8, the 488 isn’t going to be any better.

While I’m inclined to agree the F8 is worse because of the particulate filter which the 488 doesn’t have hence my question!

It seems you already know the answer. Lack of particulate filter helps but it does not sound like a “proper Ferrari” so if that’s what you want it will disappoint

Had a 488 Spider for over 2 years and much preferred it to the 458. Thought it sounded great- lots going on at different rev ranges and nice with the roof up and rear window down. Couldn’t tell it was a spider with the roof up (no body flex). Roof down occasional small scuttle shake at low speeds (vibration of rear view mirror) but this seemed to disappear as speed increased and pushing on. Although F8 10% better in most areas `I thought it sounded very poor in comparison. I’d have another again and be quite happy to pocket the £80k saving over an F8.

So, you already have the 812 but are still looking for the go-kart drivability that front engined Ferrari can not offer, then try a lambo v10.

That will feel nimble like a Fcar V8 and have more of the aural pleasures and drama you seek.

I’m a bit tired of the Lamborghini range to be honest.
Having owned 3 Aventadors including an Sv 4 Huracans including perf and perf convertible.
Great cars but having a change, also beginning to look at cost of ownership, Lambo’s are not cheap especially if you actually drive them like I do!

I’ve had a 488 spider for a couple of years now and -yes - at lower revs you can hear the turbo induction but as I tend to drive it as my occasional car once you’re up in the Rev range (and in race) it’s sounds like a proper F car to me at least.

You can also occasionally feel a little scuttle shake (even in bumpy road mode) but it doesn’t take away from the theatre and driving experience.

F40s don't sound "too" bad for a turbocharged engine!

Personally (we've had/still have the same cars as you!) I thought the 488 Spider sounded good when pressing on, obviously not as aurally pleasing as a 458 but (IMO) a better car - as you would expect from an upgrade.

I preferred the 458 to the 488 personally and was absolutely fast enough for my needs smile

I had a 458 italia and then went to a 488 spider. Whilst the noise is not the same, it's deeper growl in the 488, i found it to be just as enjoyable. I did try the F8 as well but definitely felt that was far too muted. One thing to be wary of however is the scuttle shake. Talking to various owners it seems some people just don't notice it and others can't live with it. I was the latter and only kept the 488 spider for 6 months because of this! I would certainly recommend a 488 but the coupe not the spider. I then switched to a 488 Pista which for me is the absolute perfect solution.

I'm a complete Luddite in comparison and prefer the even older cars as I think the new ones are almost too quick, maybe I'm just getting old and have turned into my Dad but that's an argument for another day!

The 488 Spider lasted about 6 months with us too and I think we did about 100 miles so it wasn't exactly rushed out every time we needed a car!

I test drove the 488 spider this morning. Although the car I drove wasn't for me I could live with spider.
Initially struggled with the narrower rev range having come from a n/a engine but that wouldn't take long to get used to. Scuttle shake was there but I do feel it is not that bad. Plenty fast enough and the sound was ok and would improve as I sync'd with the drive train.
I am in no rush but all I need is the right car with racing carbon seats and I might well go for it!.

I think it just depends on where you live, if you live in america for example there's a lot of kind of drag culture / straight roads where you can use crazy power whereas in the UK on the kinds of roads I like it would be completely suicidal to go much faster than I can in a 458 imo smile

I went from a 458 Spider to a 488 GTB, then to F12 and then to 488 Spider. I sold the 488 Spider recently and now have a Huracan EVO RWD. I live in the north of Scotland and have the NC500 and better on my doorstep. I did about 3,000 miles per year in each car between April and October (too cold in winter to use them). No track days. I really liked the 488 Spider’s noise. Of course it is no NA engine, but especially with the roof down/back window down, it sounded deep and throaty and definitely ‘special’. The 488 GTB was different - it sounded muted and was the reason I switched quickly to the F12 - to chase the engine noise I had with the 458. The F12 proved not ideal for the roads I drive - hence the switch to the 488 Spider to get the benefit of the 488 platform and powertrain (which I loved) and most of the noise back that i had with the 458. I didn’t regret it for a second - I have equally fond memories of the 488 Spider as I do of the 458 Spider.

I ran the 488 Spider and EVO RWD for a short while together, but the EVO noise and sense of occasion is just otherworldly, so I sold the 488 Spider, as it was just going to sit there. I’ll no doubt eventually tire of how full on the EVO is and I’d gladly go back to the 488 Spider at that point, even if I had the option of a 458 Spider. I’ll pass on the 296 and SF90 and whatever comes later.

And the 488 Spider in the right colour looks amazing - roof up or down. Not many spiders/convertibles can say that.

I hope this is helpful. Good luck.
